Ezhou City, Hubei Province was a separate administrative region as early as the Yao and Shun period. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it became a battleground for the vassal states of the Central Plains to compete for the world, so many ancient tombs with high research value were unearthed in Ezhou. In June 2020, the archaeological excavation of Ezhou Airport officially ended. In order to complete the archaeological work, 12 units and 22 archaeological teams spent 85 days exploring an area of nearly 900,000 square meters. According to incomplete statistics, Hubei Province allocated a special fund of about 1 100 million yuan for this archaeological work. After all the exploration work was completed, the experts laughed again and again and said, this money is too valuable. What's going on here?

In June, 2020, good news came from the archaeological community in Hubei: the cultural relics protection project of Ezhou Airport has been completed and accepted. As the largest cultural relics protection project in Hubei Province after the Three Gorges Project and the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, this archaeological action has also achieved fruitful results. 85 days ago, 22 archaeological teams and 12 related project implementation units came to Ezhou airport for exploration. This exploration covers an area of nearly 900,000 square meters, with an excavation area of 6.5438+0.5 million square meters, and 654.38+0.83 tombs and 20 ancient kiln sites have been excavated. More than 800 important cultural relics such as celadon, pottery, bronzes, ironware and stone tools have been unearthed, with nearly 12000 specimens.

According to the person in charge of Ezhou Museum, from the shape and density of this tomb group, Ezhou Airport was an important population gathering area during the Six Dynasties. The curator also introduced that this ancient tomb group not only unearthed tombs, but also unearthed many ancient kiln sites and hand-cast sites in the Tang and Song Dynasties. Although nearly 5,000 staff members were physically and mentally exhausted, they also spent a lot of special funds. However, the ancient tombs of Ezhou Airport unearthed important ancient sites such as Yujiashan Longyao in the Tang Dynasty. The curator of Ezhou Museum also said with a smile: According to the results of this excavation, the money spent should be worth it. And with the cooperation of many departments, it only took more than 80 days to successfully pass the completion acceptance of these projects.

The author believes that according to the existing data, a large number of brick tombs of the Six Dynasties, as well as a large number of celadon and gold and silver vessels have been excavated. The working group of history department of Wuhan University also participated in the archaeological excavation. Some gold and silver jewelry unearthed from this ancient tomb group is quite similar to the handicraft skills in Central Asia. Combined with the glass of Bossasan dynasty unearthed in Ezhou, it is enough to show that the cultural and economic exchanges between Wuchang area and Jiangnan and the West were quite prosperous during the Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty. The owner of this tomb group is a relatively tall cremation, and a bronze seal of "Military Sima" has also been unearthed. The so-called military Sima was a military and political office established by various countries during the Six Dynasties.

Therefore, this tomb also provides valuable information for many experts and scholars to study the hierarchy and military organization in the Six Dynasties. In addition, many ancient kiln sites in Tang and Song Dynasties have been unearthed, so this area is likely to be the production area of ancient handicraft workshops. In a word, the research value of the ancient ruins of Ezhou Airport excavated from ancient tombs is not only measured by money. Through this group of ancient tombs, we can also draw the conclusion that the central and eastern Hubei is a historical handicraft population gathering area. Say superstitious words, if there are many graves in a place, it can also show that this area is a "land of geomantic omen" which is passed down by people.

The archaeological project of Ezhou Airport has been successfully completed. Next, Ezhou Museum will cooperate with the working group of Wuhan University History Department to make a detailed analysis of the excavated related materials and funerary objects, and register all the information. With this archaeological work, it will also help future generations to understand the cultural exchanges between the Central Plains and the West during the Six Dynasties. And important information such as the daily work and living habits of ancient craftsmen.
