What is the origin and significance of Arbor Day? The origin and significance of Arbor Day

March 12 is our country’s own tree planting festival, and this day is also the anniversary of the death of Sun Yat-sen. Dr. Sun Yat-sen attached great importance to forestry construction during his lifetime. When he was the interim president of the Republic of China, he established the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with the Forestry Department under it, in charge of national forestry administrative affairs. In November 1914, the first "Forest Law" in my country's modern history was promulgated. In July 1915, the government stipulated that the annual "Qingming Festival" should be designated as Arbor Day.

In February 1979, the Sixth Session of the Fifth National People's Congress, based on the proposal of the State Council, passed a resolution to designate March 12 as my country's Arbor Day. The significance of this resolution is to mobilize the country People of all ethnic groups are actively planting trees and afforestation, accelerating the pace of greening the motherland and various forestry constructions. The date of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s death is designated as my country’s Arbor Day to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s great achievements and symbolize that Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s last wish that could not be realized during his lifetime will be realized in New China and will be realized even better.

The meaning of Arbor Day

The meaning of Arbor Day is to regulate the climate, conserve water sources and reduce pollution. Moreover, afforestation can not only green and beautify homes, but also expand mountain forest resources, prevent soil erosion, protect farmland, regulate climate, and promote economic development. It is a grand project that benefits the present and future generations.

The role of tree planting

1. Balance the earth’s carbon dioxide.

Forests are the main consumers of carbon dioxide. Producing 10 tons of dry matter per hectare of forest will absorb 16 tons of carbon dioxide and release 12 tons of oxygen, making the forest a huge oxygen reservoir. Therefore, afforestation has become the main way to slow down the greenhouse effect.

2. Windproof and sand-fixing.

Forests can reduce the intensity of wind erosion by reducing wind speed and changing wind direction; the strong root systems of forest trees, especially shrubs, can fix soil particles. Practice has proven that by creating windbreak sand forests and cooperating with agricultural and water conservancy measures, good windbreak and sand fixation effects can be achieved.

3. Maintain soil and water.

Forests can regulate runoff and water volume in dry periods, maintain water and soil, reduce sediment content in rivers, and mitigate flood disasters. Observations show that a 1 cm thick leaf litter can reduce surface runoff to 1/4 of bare land and reduce sediment volume by 94%. The amount of soil loss caused by rainfall in bare land is more than 100 times that of forest land, but the soil-fixing ability of trees, shrubs, and grass is more than 1,000 times that of pure grass. Calculations show that my country's forests reduce soil erosion by 24.6 billion cubic meters each year, reduce soil organic matter loss by 384 million tons, and protect soil worth more than 260 billion yuan. In addition, forests also have a fundamental mitigating effect on preventing river bed rises, floods and droughts, etc.

4. Conservation of water sources.

Forests are natural "green reservoirs" that can promote the normal circulation of sky water, surface water and groundwater. When it rains, more than 20% of the rainfall is intercepted by the tree crowns and branches and leaves, and 5% to 10% is intercepted and absorbed by fallen leaves and weeds on the ground. The aggregate structure of the soil in the forest can quickly convert surface water into groundwater. According to incomplete calculations, the annual water conservation capacity of my country's forests is 347.3 billion tons, equivalent to 75% of the current total reservoir capacity, and the annual water conservation value reaches more than 250 billion yuan.

5. Protect biological diversity.

Forests are the "home of species" and the largest repository of biological diversity and biological genetic resources. More than 50 species in the world live and breed in various types of forests, mainly natural forests.
