Yi nationality is the sixth largest minority in China, and its national language is Yi language, which belongs to the Yi branch of Tibeto-Burman language family of Sino-Tibetan language family. There are six dialects in North, East, South, Southeast, West and China, including five power dialects and 25 dialects.

Yi people are mainly distributed between the plateaus and coastal hills in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, and mainly gather in Chuxiong, Honghe, Liangshan, Bijie, Liupanshui and Anshun. Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture is the largest Yi inhabited area in China.
