Why have all the walls in the country been demolished, except Xi 'an's?

The most important consideration for Xi 'an not to tear down the city wall is to take it as a business card for Xi 'an. We all know that Xi is a city with rich historical background. By retaining the city wall, Xi 'an can greatly promote the development of its tourism. In other words, many people want to live in an antique city.

The ancient city must have walls. As long as it is not a small village, there must be a wall. In ancient times, city walls were strictly shaped, and there were strict restrictions on what kind of city, how high the city walls were, what materials they were made of and what shapes they were made of. There is another special place in the city wall. That is to say, the way of building city walls in each dynasty is different, so the city walls are very helpful for studying the history of dynasties.

In addition to the Great Wall in history, many places have city walls. But these walls have been weathered for a long time and can no longer be used. Moreover, with the development of military science and technology, the fortification of the city wall has been difficult to play a role after World War II. After all, no matter how strong the city wall is, it can't stand the 203mm heavy artillery. Not to mention modern missiles and air-dropped bombs, so many places began to tear down some walls.

Because I am from Zhengzhou, there is an ancient city wall of Shang Dynasty in Zhengzhou area. It's probably near Nanguan Street on Chengnan Road. At that time, my primary school was close to the city wall. The wall of Zhengzhou has been restored and turned into a ruins park. Many people play and exercise there every day. At present, there are two main ways to treat ancient city walls in China. One is direct repair. The other is demolition.

Some city walls will be repaired because of their age and great research value. And if it's some walls that have no research value, just tear them down. In fact, there is no need to be too sorry for the wall. After all, the city wall is not a tomb, and the research value is actually not high. Moreover, many ancient city walls have been weathered or simply compacted and piled up by loess. When it is windy, yellow sand will float everywhere.

Xi is a magical place. As the economic and political center of many dynasties, it was difficult for Xi 'an to build a subway. After all, ten steps to an ancient tomb is not blowing. In the 1950s, Xi 'an did plan to demolish the city walls. But it was later found that the cost of demolition was much higher than that of maintenance. At that time, the economic development was not very good, and the planning bureau didn't have that much money, so this matter came to an end. In order to facilitate travel, several more gates were opened on the city wall at that time. In the early 1960s, Xi 'an did have a movement to tear down the city walls. But three years later, the movement was urgently stopped.

Later, with the rise of tourism and the importance of cultural relics protection. Xi' an ancient city wall has been preserved. After all, Xi 'an's economic development is not particularly fast, and the existing cities are enough to meet the needs of economic development. In addition, the existence of the city wall makes Xi more antique.
