On March 25, 2020, the People's Bank of China issued an announcement to solicit artwork for the commemorative coins of the 24th Winter Olympics.

From February 4 to February 20, 2022, the 24th Winter Olympic Games will be held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. This is the first time in China's history that it has hosted the Winter Olympics. Beijing will also become the first "Double Olympic City" in the history of the Olympic movement to host both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. On December 28, 2020, the People's Bank of China issued an announcement that the two ordinary commemorative coins of the 24th Winter Olympics originally planned to be issued in 2020 will be adjusted to 2021.
