The logistics of an enterprise is like a flowing river. Starting from the supplier, it means that the materials begin to flow (of course, the information flow is earlier than the logistics), so the supplier becomes the source of this river, which has gone through a long process of supplier delivery-customer enterprise procurement-transportation-handling-distribution-unloading-customer enterprise inspection-warehouse-production-semi-finished product storage-finished product processing or assembly-finished product warehouse-distribution to customers. All links may produce errors, and all errors may eventually lead to inventory. Therefore, although the inventory is scattered in different links of the supply chain, it will eventually "accumulate" in the warehouse, so the warehouse has become "the downstream of the river". Of course, inventory cost control has become "downstream of the river". According to our experience in river management, if the Yangtze River is polluted, only the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River can certainly achieve certain results. However, the root cause of source pollution has not been solved, and the ultimate goal is to treat the symptoms rather than the root cause-the downstream is still polluted. Therefore, warehouse management usually bears the inventory pressure caused by all the company's decision-making mistakes, but it has no strength and ability to solve these problems, because people never look at the control and management of warehouses and inventories from the height of the overall logistics of enterprises, which is a "dead corner" of warehouse management in production enterprises.

From the perspective of traditional production enterprises, warehouses are usually used as storage places, but in many logistics designs, the role of warehouses should be as a conversion facility relative to storage equipment. Because, with the continuous modernization, socialization and globalization of production enterprises, the market increasingly requires enterprises to deliver goods in "multi-batch, small-batch, punctual and flexible", and the changes in the market have caused the diversity of products, making the large inventory of similar materials or products unrealistic and uneconomical; On the other hand, due to the time value of inventory funds, the time efficiency of warehousing becomes a bank in another sense, but the output value of this bank is a negative number that increases in direct proportion to inventory time.

As a result, custody has changed from a passive view focusing on storage to an active view focusing on circulation, and its functions have been continuously extended and expanded (such as adding, selecting, sorting, sub-packaging, distributing and inspecting, etc.). Therefore, the author thinks that when discussing the order processing, on-site inventory, material handling or transportation management in the logistics of production enterprises, it is generally not suitable to adopt a simple classification scheme for warehousing, but should focus on the whole logistics system of the enterprise, because it is related to many logistics components within the enterprise (such as market forecast, supplier management, production plan, personnel and equipment configuration, information transmission and processing accuracy, etc.). ). The above problems in the process of warehouse management of production enterprises are only the concrete manifestation of unreasonable planning or operation of the whole logistics system, which leads to passivity and inaction of warehouse management.
