The March of the Volunteers is a song written by Tian Han and composed by Nie Er. It is the theme song of the movie "Children of the Storm" and is known as the clarion call for the liberation of the Chinese nation. In February 1935, director Xu Xingzhi took over the filming of "Children of the Storm". Soon after, comrades who visited the prison brought back the lyrics that Tian Han wrote on the back of the cigarette box wrapper in prison. That is the original manuscript of "March of the Volunteers".

At that time, Nie Er was preparing to go to Japan to seek refuge. When he learned that there was a theme song to be written for the movie "Children of the Storm", he took the initiative to compose music for the song and promised to send back the song manuscript as soon as possible after arriving in Japan.

Nie Er quickly completed the first draft of the score after receiving the lyrics. On April 18, 1935, after Nie Er arrived in Tokyo, Japan, he completed the final version of the score and sent it to Shanghai Dentsu Film Company at the end of April. Afterwards, in order to make the melody and rhythm of the song more powerful, Nie Er and Sun Shiyi discussed and made three modifications to the lyrics, thus completing the creation of the song.
