What is punk music?

1.Punk:

Punk was born in the mid-197s, a simple rock music that originated from garage rock and pre-punk rock in the 196s. Punk band takes the simple music of the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, New York Dolls and other bands as the blueprint, trying to restore the simple nature of rock music through simple triads. Punk music doesn't pay much attention to musical skills, but prefers the sharp stance of ideological emancipation and anti-mainstream. This original intention was actively imitated in Britain and the United States under the specific historical background at that time, and finally formed punk movement. Although most punk bands are strikingly similar and their works are too monotonous, many famous punk bands have their own distinctive personality characteristics, such as the Ramones' bubble gum pop music, the Sex Pistols' Face-like strong chords, the Buzzcocks' popular feeling, the Clash's reggae element, and the Wire's artistic experimental characteristics. Since then, punk has gradually transformed into post-punk, new wave, hard core and other styles. In the mid-198s, the punk movement as a whole fell into a low tide.

2. Hard-core punk:

Hard-core punk was born in the early 198s, which further led punk rock to extremes-faster, noisier and more rigid performance, shouting singing, sloppy and dirty recording effects (sometimes including album covers). Hardcore first appeared in the United States, mainly centered on Los Angeles and new york, and then gradually spread, with the emergence of famous hardcore bands such as Black Flag, Husker Du, Descendents, Meat Puppets, Dead Kennydys and Bad Brains. Hard-core punk has had a far-reaching impact on many rock styles in the future, but it has not been mainstreamed, and this situation has continued until today.

3.Proto Punk:

Pre-punk happened in the United States in the late 196s and early 197s. At that time, some bands began to try to create rough rock music under the idea of minimalism. At that time, this kind of band, represented by the Velvet Underground, did not consciously play the aggressive role of rebuilding rock music, restoring its simple essence and overthrowing the beautified rock music. Obviously, all they did was a subconscious reaction. Although their music did not bring out the shadow of punk in the future, at least they began to pay attention to the deepest essence of punk culture, but it was not rebellious enough. Punk finally discovered and extended the vague and simple spirit of pre-punk, and integrated the complete rebellious spirit into the rough music of pre-punk, creating a strong voice of the times that challenged society and denied beautifying rock, which was accepted by countless young people and was able to create a punk dynasty.

4.New Wave:

In the early 198s, the rapid expansion of punk gradually made it fall behind, and the new wave movement began to step onto the historical stage. The diversity of music reflected in the new wave movement meets the needs of some fans who are allergic to punk. The popularity of Power-Pop (power pop), Synth-Pop (synthpop) and Pop-Reggae, which are based on pop music, has contributed to the new wave movement. To a great extent, the great success of the New Wave Movement should be attributed to the birth of MTV in the 198s. With its help, the New Wave Movement also has a huge market in the mainstream society, and it has formed a competitive situation. Around 1982, the new wave movement began to die under the rumbling wheels of heavy metal chariots, but it laid the foundation for the later College Rock and the mainstream of alternative rock in the 199s, and became an important stage in the history of rock and roll.

5.Post Punk:

After the punk movement began in the late 197s, some bands only inherited the stubborn spirit of punk and did not become redundant copies of Sex Pistols. These bands show incredible complexity and experimental characteristics in music, and completely abandon the rough triad of punk. Their works are full of artistic, sophisticated music materials and challenges, but they are called post-punk because of their anti-mainstream rock, anti-tradition and anti-culture punk spirit. The post-punk band represented by Joy Division and the Cure not only further increased the weight of music elements, making it more complicated, but also made music become melancholy and cold. At the same time, the post-punk band tried to change the structure and creative theme of traditional rock songs, reflecting the spirit of complete rebellion. The post-punk trend of thought gradually became the ideological pillar of alternative rock in the future and continued to be extended in different rock styles.

6.Oi! (alas! ):

Oi! In fact, it is just a branch of hardcore punk, an extreme style completely based on pure violence and noise and no aesthetic feeling. At first, the band of this style didn't have any radical political inclination and social responsibility, but later it gradually developed into race music flaunting white supremacy. Although not all bands have racist tendencies, it is still recognized as a very dangerous rock music, a white music belonging to the underground world, which was excluded and eventually eliminated by rock music.

7.Synth-Pop (synthpop):

at first, synth-pop was only a main branch style of the new wave movement. At that time, many bands (mainly British bands) influenced by Roxy Music and David Bowie began to be keen on using synthesizers. At that time, the original intention was only a useful supplement to electro-acoustic instruments, but it had little effect. At first, synthpop was very crude and filled with a strange and thin flavor, which was finally changed by Duran Duran. Duran Duran skillfully grafted the synthesizer pop music and dance music. The improved music became more popular and popular, and soon became fashionable, which was imitated by many bands. Duran Duran became famous and became the first hero in synthpop. In 1984, the era of synthpop ended completely, but its influence continued. Synthesizers began to be regarded as an important way of playing and were widely used in many styles.

8.Power Pop (power pop):

The original roots of power pop can be traced back to the early 197s, and the Raspberries, Big Star and Badfinger were the original definitions of this style. This kind of powerful pop music, which combines the Who, Beatles and Beach Boys, formed the main force of the new wave movement with punk in the late 197s, and was finally classified as a post-punk style. Power pop's works are usually about three minutes long, and pay attention to the explosive power of melody and music, which is somewhat similar to punk, but pay more attention to technology and popular feeling, and are not keen on rebellion and more commercialized. In the late 197s, some punk bands were transformed into power pop, and in the 198s, power pop began to integrate more into various rock styles. At the same time, pure power pop began to decline.

9.No Wave:

No Wave is the first main style of post-punk movement, which only appeared in new york at that time, and the music was atonal and harsh noise experimental music. This style of band pays more attention to artistry than music itself. Too boring and lack of commercial potential made this style never really popular, and it was not until the rise of noise rock represented by Sonic Youth in the middle and late 198s that this style was put on the rock stage again.

1.Punk Revival:

in the early 199s, American punk ushered in its second spring. Punk Pop by Green Day and the Offspring began to make punk enter the mainstream rock. Perhaps inspired by the hard core turning into speed metal in the late 198s, the music of punk revival band not only kept simple music lines and fast speed, but also became heavier and heavier. On the other hand, power pop's flattering image, smoother sound effects and exquisite arrangement make the audience feel the beautiful music as well as the punk power, which is the magic weapon for the revival of punk. Punk Pop is regarded as an important part of Post-Grunge (post-junk music, that is, moderately commercialized Grunge)
