Why did people protest at the G20 summit?
International Online: According to the "New York Times" report on the 24th, the third G20 Leaders Financial Summit was held in Pittsburgh, the United States, on September 24th and 25th, attracting a variety of people from all over the world. Protesters with different purposes made the citizens feel that the whole city was at war.
In order to ensure the safe convening of the summit, the host city of Pittsburgh in the United States has adopted all-round and multi-level prevention and control measures and mobilized huge manpower and material resources to build a security "fortress" for the summit. The total security expenditure is approximately US$19 million. Ground and air patrols are fully utilized, and nearly 5,000 security personnel are mobilized, including approximately 2,500 National Guardsmen, 1,200 state police, more than 870 Pittsburgh police officers, and other law enforcement personnel. .
Pittsburgh has preemptively closed its famous "Golden Triangle" business district and put up fences along sidewalks in anticipation of possible conflicts. Officials said police just last week vacated 1,000 cells in the city's jails.
On the afternoon of the 24th, a group of black-clad protesters tried to march inside the main venue, the Lawrence Convention Center. The patrol officers first used batons and shields to drive them away, and fired sharp cannonballs. Tear gas and impact grenades were later used, and the scene was enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke. But the conflict remained well outside the conference's security boundaries. Police repeatedly announced warnings over loudspeakers. On another street, protesters rolled a huge blue metal bucket, temporarily blocking the passage of police cars.
Witnesses said: "It's like living in a war-torn area." Many local residents stayed away from the downtown area during these two days.
Among the protesters were groups calling for environmental protection, as well as anti-capitalists. Several college students came to protest because they were dissatisfied with the reality that economic and trade policies for four to five billion people were decided by more than two dozen people. The 53-year-old woman hopes that the international community will pay more attention to Myanmar monks. At least a dozen people have been arrested, and no serious injuries have been reported.
