What should I do if the cat has a hematoma in its ear?

Auricular hematoma is an ear disease that cats often suffer from, but when you find that your cat's ear is swollen and the swollen part is in a high temperature state, you should suspect that it may be an auricle hematoma.

Why do cats form ear hematoma?

The main reason for the formation of auricle hematoma is that after the rupture of blood vessels in auricle, blood keeps accumulating between auricle skin and cartilage, eventually forming swelling of different sizes. Hematoma is mainly composed of blood, lymph and tissue fragments from ear vein. Then why did the blood vessels in the auricle rupture? The main reasons are as follows:

1. infection, cats will feel itchy after being infected with ear mites, so cats will often scratch their ears, which will lead to blood vessel rupture and ear hematoma;

2. Otitis externa, cats will feel pain or itching when suffering from otitis externa, and cats will often shake their heads or scratch and cause hematoma;

3. Fighting or some trauma causes the cat's auricle to be injured, which leads to the rupture of auricle blood vessels and eventually forms an ear hematoma;

4. Ear or head tumor;

5. Some diseases lead to the increase of capillary fragility in cats. When cats scratch their ears, it is easy to cause capillary bleeding, thus forming ear hematoma;

6. The owner often rubs the cat's ear, which may lead to ear hematoma over time. In short, as long as it can cause the blood vessels in the auricle of cats to rupture, it may be caused by ear hematoma, such as scratching or shaking your head frequently.

How to treat ear hematoma?

The treatment of ear hematoma can be conservative treatment or surgical treatment. As for which method to adopt, it mainly depends on the size and time of hematoma. If the hematoma is small (such as the size of peanuts), it takes a long time to form, and there is no sign of further increase, generally conservative treatment can be taken. Surgical treatment is generally used when conservative treatment is ineffective, or when the hematoma is large or even the whole auricle has been affected in time.

Conservative treatment is mainly to suck out the liquid in the hematoma with a needle or make a small incision in the hematoma to drain the liquid out, then press the affected ear and take some drugs orally to control inflammation and exudation, so as to achieve the purpose of treatment. But in clinic, the cases treated by this method are easy to relapse and the treatment period is long. The main method of surgical treatment is to cut the hematoma through surgery, and then suture it after thorough cleaning and hemostasis. Practice has proved that surgery can quickly relieve hematoma and shorten the treatment time.

Special reminder is that in the treatment of ear hematoma, the cause of hematoma must be found and treated, otherwise no matter which treatment method is adopted, it is impossible to achieve good therapeutic effect. For example, if the hematoma is caused by frequent scratching after the cat's ear is infected with ear mites, then we must also treat the ear mites together when treating the hematoma, otherwise it will seriously affect the treatment effect.
