Haimen Old Street: Historical Memory of a City

An old street stands out in a modern city.

In Taizhou, except for the old Haimen people, few people know that there is Haimen Old Street.

From the establishment of Haimen Special Zone in July of 1980 to the establishment of Jiaojiang City in July of the following year and Jiaojiang District in Taizhou City in June, the old Haimen has experienced rapid changes.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, the old street was renovated. Walking on the street paved with stone slabs, an ancient rhyme came to my face: white walls and gray tiles, antique lattice windows, and exquisite "ox legs", as if returning to that distant era. The song of "Love in Old Street" immediately sounded in my ears: Grandpa used to play here when he was young, and the high front door seemed to be next to my house, with a loose lawn and a few crickets. ...

The 70-year-old Chen Laobo is an old Haimen. Speaking of the prosperity of the old street, he seems to have returned to the past: "This old street is the top street of Haimen. On the day of the market, there are stalls on both sides, and the road can't walk. I used to play here when I was a child. I bought shrimp and sugar, decorated lanterns, decorated lanterns and sang operas during the Chinese New Year holiday, but I just couldn't squeeze in. More lively than the current crossroads! "

According to historical records, this' Haimen Old Street' almost condensed the history of Haimen for hundreds of years.

In the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1387), Tang He, a general of the Ming Dynasty, demolished the wall stones of Huangyan County and built the Haimen Acropolis, which was 20 feet high and took 30 steps in four weeks. There are five gates in the city: Yanqing in the east, Ningyuan in the west, Defeng in the south, Linjiang in the north and Jingbo in the north. Linjiangmen is the gate of Zhongshan East Road today.

In the 24th year of Qing Emperor Kangxi (1685), Zhejiang Customs was established in the imperial court. In the second year of Xianfeng (1852), the customs moved to the outside of Linjiangmen suspension bridge, commonly known as "Taidaguan".

In the 24th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty (1898), after haimen port was officially established as a port for trade, the streets here became increasingly prosperous, with many shops and businessmen.

Most of the existing buildings in Laojie were built in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. This street connects Zhongshan East Road in the south and Jiang Bin Road in the north. The original street was 470 meters long, but now it is 225 meters long and about 6 to 8 meters wide. It runs in the north-south direction and is paved with stone slabs. At the southern end is the suspension bridge head, which is a bustling street corner; There is yangfu Temple at the north end, and the original archway in the north of the temple reads "Haimen Pass".

This old Haimen street, which has been condensed for more than a century, retains the features of different periods. It is said that the old Haimen people came to Shanghai to make a living. When they got rich, they returned to Haimen and built European-style buildings according to the old Shanghai model. The street business was booming, hence the name "little shanghai". So the north and south styles of old streets are different. Most of the buildings in the north are European-style, the buildings in the south are Ming and Qing dynasties, and then the buildings in the Republic of China. After the New China, the color of the Cultural Revolution was added, which made the old street have distinct characteristics of the times.

Repair the old as before and keep the original appearance of history.

Since the spring of 200 1, Jiaojiang district government has carried out protective development of old streets. How to protect it? They visited Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other old areas and determined the principle of "combining operational protection with protective management". Professor Changqing, who specializes in ancient architecture at Tongji University in Shanghai, was invited to plan. He took twenty or thirty master students and doctoral students to the old street and gave it a detailed physical examination like taking care of a centenarian. Finally, he prescribed a prescription of "repairing the old as before".

This is a "prescription" different from other ancient buildings. For the convenience of the map, in many places, the original site was demolished and rebuilt, and then the boards were "old" with the high temperature of the cutting machine. Although the appearance is cool, it has no antique charm. The difficulty of "repairing the old as the old" is that every piece of wood and decoration after demolition needs to be replaced, and every place needs to be installed as it is, which is very difficult and costly.

In order to preserve the antique of the old street, the maintenance staff first took photos with the camera, and then recorded the positions of the demolished "Dougong" and "Pailou" one by one, cleaned them up and wrapped them. Designed and produced the characteristic number of Haimen Old Street, and then put it back. After four years of restoration, an antique old street with white walls and gray tiles reappears in front of us. It is 225 meters long from north to south and covers an area of 3 1 mu, located in Diaolan, Zhu Chi.

Speaking of naming old streets, there is another interesting thing. Haimen Old Street was originally named Beixinjiao Street, so some people say it is called Beixinjiao Street. However, because the dialect "Beixin" is homophonic with "misfortune", the masses don't like it, so it is simply called "Haimen Old Street".

Haimen Old Street retains the memory of the city.

At the beginning of this year, after the protective renovation of Haimen Old Street was completed, it was handed over to Jiaojiang State-owned Assets Management Co., Ltd. Faced with this "antique" concentrated for hundreds of years, the company's operators were not in a hurry to attract investment, and thought that since they spent huge sums of money to repair the old street, they should retain tourists.

What can I do to keep people? Is it just an old street only 225 meters long? If the ancient street only provides a way for customers to come and go in a hurry, or just sells goods to customers, it is better to let investors develop it at the beginning, so that the country will not have to bear this heavy burden. Thinking about it, they think that the ancient street is only the epitome of history, and it must be endowed with cultural connotation to have charm, and urban modernization cannot be separated from culture. Urban culture is the foundation of modernization, so let us keep the memory of the city. Based on this understanding, they vigorously explored history.

Cultural background:

Tongkang Sauce Winery, which was established in 1 175, will reopen at the original site; 1806' s "Fang Wansheng" pharmacy and Dafu pharmacy have been recognized; Monuments have been carved in buildings and streets with historical and cultural commemorative value, such as Taidaguan, Yangfu Temple, Stage, Dongxin Street, Xintang Lane and Quxiang Road.

The northern end of Haimen Old Street is the gateway to haimen port, and the archway with three characters of "Haimen Pass" is magnificent. In order to make the ancient street more complete, they rebuilt the Haimen Pass archway at the original site according to the drawings and the "Guanting Pavilion" sent by local politicians to the reception area in the old days. At this point, an old street has its charm.

They also infiltrated the humanities into the old streets and set up historical and cultural showrooms to tell Taizhou people where Taizhou came from. They take "Ancient Zhang 'an-Old Haimen-New Jiaojiang" as the main line, and systematically sort out the history and cultural development of Jiaojiang for thousands of years, reflect the regional cultural characteristics of Jiaojiang, and explore the historical and cultural heritage of Taizhou according to nine sections, including ancient Zhang 'an, Old Haimen, New Jiaojiang, haimen port history, commercial history, people's history, Chenda Island history, local famous products and folk customs.

Haimen Old Street also carries out unified street view layout and unified shop sign layout design to ensure the consistency of block landscape.

There are still two months before the opening of the street on New Year's Day. To the company's surprise, there is an endless stream of telephone calls and guests planning to settle down. Now, even many newlyweds come here to take wedding photos, and the newcomers and the ancient buildings set each other off and become a beautiful scenery.

Old street has become an eternal memory in the album of new people.
