I have nearly 20 years of calligraphy skills and want to learn Chinese painting. I don't know where to start.

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, but I am willing to share my experience with the landlord.

I am the opposite of you. I studied Chinese painting for 15 years before I began to practice calligraphy seriously. Now calligraphy has become the main thing, but Chinese painting has gradually given up.

You have a book age of 20 years, so there should be no problem with real cursive writing, which is the advantage of Chinese painting. Although they all use pen, ink, paper and inkstone, there are still many differences between painting and calligraphy. Calligraphy pays attention to lines and rhythms, while painting emphasizes modeling and interest in pen and ink. But calligraphy and painting are interlinked in the highest realm, that is, pursuing the so-called "artistic conception". Some people say that good books are drawn and good paintings are written. I think you might as well work hard in the following aspects:

First, practice your hands. Chinese painting has always attached importance to copying. According to your long-term study, perhaps "literati painting" is more suitable for you, that is, freehand flower-and-bird painting or freehand landscape painting. Find a model of copying Chinese painting, such as Mustard Garden or some new primary textbooks of Chinese painting, and copy more. Don't use pigment first, just use ink, so Chinese painting needs to pay attention to the change of ink color. The so-called "multicolored ink" (burnt, thick, heavy, light and light) is not effective in monochrome printing of mustard garden, which needs attention. Basic brushwork is easy to learn, such as hook, dot and dye in flower-and-bird painting, strokes in landscape painting and figure painting. You have a basic knowledge of calligraphy.

Second, practice your eyes. Pay attention to sketching, carry a sketch book with you, draw trees, flowers, animals and rocks with a pencil or pen (brush is preferred, but not convenient to carry), and practice your ability to write without modification. Sketching is to exercise modeling ability, which is the basic skill and training approach needed by any kind of painting. Chinese painting sketches should be summarized, not paying attention to light and shadow, but paying more attention to structure and charm. Also pay attention to refining, such as painting flowers. "Thousands of flowers are dazzling, and only two or three are pleasing to the eye." Then draw these two or three branches, which is the ability to practice your eyes.

Third, practice your heart. One of the characteristics of Chinese painting is "knowing by eyes and remembering by heart", that is, in specific creation, models (except portraits) and templates are generally not compared, but the materials accumulated in the heart are artistically processed and then appear on the rice paper, so there is no arbitrary method, so we must first "plan". The process of spiritual training may be what China painters have been pursuing all their lives. From this perspective, in fact, Chinese painting creation is "idealistic".

Finally, talk about the characteristics of literati painting. Literati painting is actually that those ancient literati were impatient with writing and began to try painting creation. The biggest difference between literati painting and craftsman painting is "artistic conception". Craftsman's painting needs craft and shape, but literati's painting often only pays attention to the spirit conveyed by pen, but ignores the image itself. Therefore, there is a saying that "god is written in form". Craftsman painting is "god is written in form", and so is literati painting. It is suggested to look at the paintings of Xu Wei, Badashanren, Mi Fei, Su Shi, Ni Zan and Shi Tao, and the paintings of modern masters Qi Baishi, Wu Changshuo, Li Kuchan, Pan Tianshou, Fu Baoshi and Li Keran should also be consulted.
