Yuyuantan is historically regarded as royal territory, so it makes sense for the State Guesthouse to be built here. In the past few decades, Yuyuantan has been completely transformed, especially the acres of cherry blossoms. It has become the most famous cherry blossom viewing place in the capital. Although not as obsessed with cherry blossoms as the Japanese, the Chinese are also very fond of cherry blossoms in recent years. Every spring, Yuyuantan is crowded with people. I remember going there one year. I went home not long after entering because there were too many people.

Since the 1960s, my family has lived in Sanlihe, very close to Yuyuantan Park. At that time, Yuyuantan was a place very much like a rural area. You could swim in the river, and that’s where I learned to swim. In addition to farmland, there are also pig farms not far from the shore. When I was a primary school student, I often went to work in the pig farms. This scene is particularly vivid in my memory. More than 50 years later, Yuyuantan has become the best place to watch cherry blossoms in Beijing, so I feel this way.
