As a native of Henan, the most basic feature must be that he can speak Henan dialect, with some local accents, but most words are similar to Mandarin, and only a few words are incomprehensible to outsiders.

Dialects are mainly spoken with people who are close to each other, but sometimes this is not the case. For example, many students in my school now come from rural areas and are used to speaking Henan dialect. Even Mandarin has some dialect accents.

Usually, when two people meet for the first time and communicate in a dialect, they will never change in the future, and so will Putonghua.

Before the military training class, I used to chat with people in the dormitory in Henan dialect. One of them was later assigned to the same class as me. He was very close to me and another classmate, but I talked with another classmate in Mandarin. If the three of us talk together, then Mandarin will be used between the two of us, and we will speak Henan dialect to that person, which leads to the need to constantly remove the accent and return to the cycle. .

Sometimes talking to a stranger in Henan dialect is to let him know that he is a fellow villager, which makes things smoother, but it is not easy to use the same "language" (dialect or Mandarin) with a person, because you don't know what he will say to communicate with you, and you can't know whether he can speak Mandarin by his appearance unless the other person speaks first, which can ease the embarrassment.

Sometimes when shopping in the mall, I will ask the clerk in Henan dialect, but the reply is Mandarin, and vice versa.

However, I still hope to communicate with strangers in Mandarin more often in public, because we are all literate people, and speaking dialects may embarrass foreigners who don't understand dialects.
