Unique Lisu Marriage Custom Culture

Getting married is our impression of ancient weddings. Then, what is the wedding custom of Lisu, one of the ethnic minorities in China? Their marriage customs are different and have their own characteristics. I have collected some knowledge about the marriage customs in Lisu culture. Let's learn about the unique marriage customs of Lisu people!

Young men and women get to know each other through labor production, festivals, weddings, harvest celebrations, social gatherings, business contacts, string girls, etc., and they have a love for each other and can find opportunities to sing operas with each other. If you meet each other on the path, by the zip line, working in four rooms and chopping wood in the dense forest, you can turn your back, cover your ears and throw a song at the person you appreciate. The other party will reply to the song when they hear it. In this way, the feelings of two people are getting closer and closer in mutual questions and answers.

After breakfast the next day, the woman's family formed a lively farewell party, carrying a dowry, and the bride's uncle left the woman's house with firecrackers and muskets on his back. At this time, the bride said that she couldn't bear to leave her parents and sisters and wanted to cry politely, but the crying usually didn't last long, and the guests sang (farewell songs). It can be said that the bride is on the road with singing and crying.

At the door of the man's house, from the bamboo building to the yard, there are people who have been married by the man everywhere. People stood on both sides of the substation to greet the bride with grand etiquette and welcome the guests who saw her off.

After the bride entered the bamboo house of the man's house, seven or eight strong boys came out of the farewell party of the woman's house. They danced around the fireplace of the man's house (stomping) to symbolically check whether the bamboo house where the bride lived was solid. After the dance, the people who saw the wedding off went into the house and sat down.

At this time, while drinking, the old man sat around the fireplace and sang songs of the Yi people, using songs to educate the new people not to forget the history of the nation and the difficulties of the ungrateful ancestors in starting a business. Then, the singer of the man's family and the singer of the woman's family began to sing. Sometimes a solo duet, sometimes a lead singer, and everyone sang in chorus, only listening to bursts of songs, one after another, plus bursts of laughter, the festive atmosphere was very strong. When a singer sings, his right hand is placed on his partner's shoulder and his left hand is placed under his ear. They swing from side to side with the rhythm of the melody, and the melody they sing is lively, beautiful and smooth. On the wedding day, the person who sent the bride was warmly received at the man's house. In addition to enjoying the wine as much as possible, the man's family also came to propose a toast to persuade the wine, which led many people who saw the bride off to become alcoholics. The more drunk the farewell party, the happier the man's family will be, and even become a beautiful talk.

The next morning, when the people who sent the wedding came back, the man asked them to bring some wine and meat to her parents. Since the newlyweds were separated on the wedding day, the next night, an old man was asked to hold a glass of wine by the fireplace to bless the newlyweds: "All insects, fish, birds and animals in the world are in pairs. I hope you and your wife will grow old together. " A few days to more than ten days after marriage, the groom accompanied the bride back to her family.

When going home, the groom should bring pork, glutinous rice, tripods and other things to his father-in-law's house, and at the same time help his father-in-law for more than ten days before going back hand in hand. When coming back, the mother will give the bride's daughter a chicken, a pot and a sickle to wish the couple good luck and happiness in their families. The custom of cradle marriage, exchange marriage and robbing marriage once existed in the history of Yi people, but now it has basically disappeared.
