Do monks eat leeks? Why?
The so-called vegetarian diet not only does not eat meat, but also does not eat green onions, onions, leeks, garlic and garlic. Why? There is such a passage in the "Shurangama Sutra": "All living beings live because they eat sweet things, and die because they eat poisonous things. These living beings seek samadhi and should cut off the world. The five pungent vegetables are the five pungent ones." Cooked food causes sexual intercourse, and raw food increases jealousy. In a world like this, even if a person who eats pungent food can preach the twelve sutras, the gods of the ten directions will stay away from him because he dislikes the smell and filthiness, and the hungry ghosts will lick his lips because of the food he eats, and they will always live with ghosts. Merit will fade away day by day, and there will be no benefit if it grows. For those who eat spicy food and practice samadhi, Bodhisattvas, gods, and good gods of the ten directions will not come to protect them. ’
From the "Shurangama Sutra", we can understand the importance of diet to the body and mind. Therefore, we must choose food carefully. The five pungent vegetables mentioned in the scriptures: onions, garlic, leeks, scallions, and xingqu. Although they themselves do not have toxins and are not meat vegetables, the ingredients contained in the pungent vegetables are very important to those who study Buddhism and practice Taoism. Generally speaking, it is like poison that will harm our body and mind. Because if these pungent vegetables are eaten raw, they will arouse anger and anger, and if eaten cooked, they will encourage lustful thoughts. Invisibly, it encourages us to commit all kinds of evil behaviors such as killing, stealing, lust, lying, etc., and consumes our Dharma body, wisdom and life.
There are people in the world who are eloquent and able to speak all the classics, but if they do not eliminate the five pungents, even if there are Bodhisattvas and Dharma-protecting dragons and deities who want to protect them, as soon as they smell the bad taste in their mouths, they will He was afraid of being avoided, so of course he refused to protect him. And because its own stinky smell is exactly the same as the smell of beings in the ghost realm; because hungry ghosts like the smell of filth, they will be inspired to lick their lips when they smell the smell in their mouths. Therefore, if you often stay with beings in the ghost realm, your good dharma and good karma will gradually drift away, and your merits will gradually diminish. All in all, eating the five pungents not only has no benefits, but also has various disadvantages. Those who truly learn Buddhism and practice must abstain from the five pungents in order to achieve purity.
