The Yuefu is a specialized official office established since the Qin Dynasty to arrange music, train musicians and collect folk songs. The Han Yuefu refers to the poetry collected and compiled by the Yuefu agency in the Han Dynasty. These poems were originally circulated among the people and were preserved through the Yuefu. The Han people called them "Ge Shi". In the Wei and Jin Dynasties, they were called "Yuefu" or "Han Yuefu". Poems written by later generations of literati imitating this form are also called "Yuefu poems".

"Yuefu" is an official office established during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. Its duty is to collect folk songs or poems by literati to set the music for performance at court sacrifices or banquets. The poems it collected and compiled were later called "Yuefu Poems", or simply "Yuefu Poems". It is a new poetry style following the Book of Songs and Songs of Chu.
