What is the cause of leek death? How to prevent it?

It may be caused by waterlogging or low temperature. The solution is to drain well and raise the ambient temperature as much as possible.

First, waterlogging soaking

Anyone who has eaten Chinese chives knows that Chinese chives are very wet and easy to rot when exposed to water, especially in summer, which is very hot and decays faster. Although the growth of leek in Changtian needs a lot of water, it doesn't mean that the more water, the better. If there is too much water, the ground and roots of the main stem will easily die if soaked for a long time. This phenomenon is usually because people plant leeks in low-lying fields that are easy to irrigate in farmland, and it rains continuously in rainy season. Because of the low terrain, too much water can't be discharged.

1, low-lying areas themselves have poor drainage and slow drainage. If the total area of the leek field is relatively large, you can choose to get some cloth bags filled with fine sand to pile up the ridges, then drain the water in the leek field as much as possible with a spoon, then increase the drainage ditch between the ridges in the field, sprinkle more plant ash on the ridges to absorb water, and finally plant the loose soil to improve the air permeability and soil layer.

2. If the total planting area of leek is small and the drainage is difficult, you can choose to dig it out and move it to other parts of the vegetable garden.

Second, it is not good to catch a cold at low temperature.

Although leek has strong adaptability and can resist certain cold, if it is particularly cold in summer, such as the northern part of winter, it is normal that the ambient temperature is lower than 10 degrees, and sometimes even a few degrees below zero or even a dozen degrees will die. In such a cold climate, the exposed main stems of leeks are frozen and withered, while the underground roots of leeks are insulated by thick soil layers, and generally will not wither until spring.

In view of the leek death caused by this low temperature, what we can do is to prevent it in advance. The local adaptation temperature is relatively low. After pouring enough water on the leek in front of beginning of winter, loosen the soil, and finally cover it with straw, which can better keep warm and cover the roots of the leek until it clears up.

Of course, if you don't grow many leeks and don't want to die of low temperature, you can dig them out and plant them in movable pots or foam incubators after autumn, which is also convenient for normal supervision. Then, when the weather is fine in spring, you can plant them in the ground or continue to plant them in flowerpots/foam incubators.
