But there are not many historical records about Shenyang. Here, paleolithic artifacts have also been unearthed, and woodcarving birds have been unearthed at Xinle site in the north of Shenyang, which is a symbol of the sun god bird, a bit like the original Dongyi tribe totem. It used to be the Liaodong city of Yan State during the Warring States Period, and it was called "Houcheng" at that time. However, the important town of Liaodong has always been Liaoyang, not Shenyang. During the Western Han Dynasty, Shenyang began to build a city. Since then, this land has been unknown. It was not until the Qidan period of the Liao Dynasty that Shenyang began to build a city. According to the records of Liao History, in 926 AD, Yelu Abaoji, the emperor of Liao Dynasty, placed the people taken captive from Sanhe and Jixian in Hebei Province in the ancient city of Shenyang, and rebuilt a square tucheng in the old place, named Shen Zhou. However, this tucheng was small in scale, with a circumference of only two hundred miles.
