What happened in Ukraine?

Historically, Ukraine once belonged to the Russian Empire.

1654, Ukrainian cossack leader Khmelnitski signed the Treaty of Peleyaslav with the Russian czar, inviting Russia to rule eastern Ukraine. Since then, the eastern part of Ukraine (the left bank of Dnieper River) has officially merged with the Russian Empire, and the history of alliance between Ukraine and Russia has begun.

Ukraine and Russia, originally Eastern Slavs, both developed from Russia in Kiev. Later, due to internal contradictions and Mongolian invasion, as well as the rule of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Poland, an independent Ukrainian nation gradually began to form.
