Generally speaking, there are intervals between the days of burial and rest, ranging from three to five days to ten days. During this time, people in the stockade will go to the dead's house to wake up and "cry". "Crying for the Soul" is a major feature of the funeral of Huayao Yi people, which is usually done by married women. "Crying for the Soul" doesn't cry loudly, but it has tunes and is extremely rich in content. Some people mourn the dead, some people accuse future generations of unfilial, and some people tell that the dead have gone well all the way.

But the three souls should follow Bema's instructions, first return to the birthplace of their ancestors, and then separate. Therefore, according to the custom of Yi people, Ma Bei must be offered as a sacrifice after death to show the way and send the soul. The route of sending the soul back to the deceased is the route of ancient ancestors' migration, which allows the deceased to reach the place where their ancestors lived smoothly. On the first night of the funeral, people stayed up all night, and all the young men and women in the stockade danced in front of the coffin. This is called "stepping on the road of thorns", which means stepping on a smooth road for the dead.

At the funeral, the dutiful son and grandson knelt on both sides of the road, and the coffin carried by the married mature man in the stockade passed through the middle, followed by the advocacy team. After the coffin passed, the dutiful son and grandson stood up crying and followed, and were sent to the foot of the mountain. Then, the family burned some items used by the deceased at the roadside of Zhaitou. After that, people rushed home for fear of being infected with evil things, and they could not enter the house until they crossed the brazier at the door.
