How to write a review

3. Basic techniques for writing reflections after reading

After reading an article or a book, write down the feelings, experiences, education and inspiration you received, etc. The article is called "After Reading".

The basic ideas of the after-reading thoughts are as follows:

(1) Briefly describe the relevant content of the original text. Such as the title of the book or article read, the author, the year of writing, and a summary of the original book or text. I write this part to explain where my thoughts come from and to pave the way for the discussion in the following chapters. This part must highlight the word "simple". It must not describe the specific content of the reading or article in long paragraphs. Instead, it should briefly describe the parts that are directly related to the feelings, and omit things that have nothing to do with the feelings.

(2) Clarify the basic viewpoint. Choose the point you feel most deeply and express it clearly in a concise sentence. Such sentences can be called "opinion sentences". This opinion sentence expresses the central argument of this article. The position of the "opinion sentence" in the article is flexible. It can be at the beginning, the end or the middle of the article. For students who are new to writing, it is best to use a straight-to-the-point method and write your point of view at the beginning of the article.

(3) Present facts and reason around basic viewpoints. This part is the main part of the argumentative essay, which is an elaboration of the basic point (i.e., the central argument). It proves the correctness of the point of view by presenting facts and reasoning, making the argument more prominent and convincing. What should be noted in this process is that the facts and truths presented must closely focus on and serve the basic viewpoints.

(4) Connect basic viewpoints with reality. A good post-reading review should have the flavor of the times and true feelings. To do this, we must be good at connecting with reality. This "reality" can be personal thoughts, words, deeds, and experiences, or it can be some social phenomenon. When connecting with reality, we should also pay attention to focusing on the basic viewpoints and serving the viewpoints, instead of blindly connecting and disconnecting.

The above four points are the basic ideas for writing a review, but this idea is not static and needs to be mastered flexibly. For example, "briefly describing the original text" usually precedes "explaining the point of view", but the order of the two can be interchanged. Furthermore, if the facts presented in the third step are social phenomena or personal experiences, there is no need to write the fourth part.
