Some introductions of traveling to Egypt?
It is very useful to learn some simple Arabic.
Forget Arabic unless you are really interested. But Arabic numerals must be learned for your convenience and to prevent you from being cheated. Arabic numerals are not commonly understood as 1, 2, 3, 4, and they have their own writing methods. 1, 2, 3, 4 cannot be seen in most land types in Egypt. Once, a scoundrel tried to cheat us out of our money. He told us that something for 50 cents a pound cost 6 pounds. I thought, go to hell, because we can't read the price list.
The most exciting moment for our tour representatives is to teach us Arabic. Think for yourself, if you teach foreigners Chinese, will they be funny when their pronunciation is not correct? Then it is the same for us to learn their language. I think the biggest advantage of learning some simple expressions is to narrow the distance with strangers. During our contact with another tour guide, I just mumbled a sentence in Arabic, which I found very funny. However, he suddenly changed from a depressed mental state, and he was extremely excited that day, which really surprised us.
Clothes: We are in winter. Before I went, I noticed that the lowest temperature in some places was 5 degrees, such as Cairo. I also saw some photos of local people wearing ski shirts. So I brought some thicker clothes. The original perception of temperature varies from person to person. For me (a Shanghainese), whether in the evening or in the morning, a thick coat/overcoat is enough. During the day, we usually have a long-sleeved T-shirt inside and a thin zipper coat outside. But foreigners in Europe wear suspenders, shorts and short sleeves. When I was in the Valley of the Kings, I wore a local short-sleeved gown. One of them seems to be a Japanese tourist, wearing a down jacket. The contrast is incredible.
Misguided by the next stop: Egypt, it is said that Egyptians don't like yellow, so it is best not to wear yellow clothes. Many people say it is best not to wear revealing clothes, because Egypt is a Muslim country. Never believe this statement, no matter whether it was true or not before. But at least this is definitely not the case now. I asked many Egyptians, and no one thought yellow was bad. Any color will do. As for revealing clothes, that's how European tourists dress. The places we go to are all tourist attractions, and I believe Egyptian women have long been used to it.
Shoes: My colleague advised me to buy high-top shoes, because many places stepped on the desert, so he bought his own cat hiking shoes. I am stubborn, because I have many shoes, and I don't want to spend more money on them, so I wore a pair of sandals and traveled all over Egypt. Facts have proved that there is nothing wrong with sandals, which are light and soft. Of course, my sandals are very athletic and masculine, so I have confidence because I follow me everywhere. But there is absolutely no problem with ordinary sneakers. After the trip, take out an old pair and throw it away.
Sunscreen products: I have never used sunscreen at any time except sunbathing. It turns out that even the sun in winter can still tan people. My face, where the sunglasses are not covered, has obvious color difference from other places. I like this sunburn cosmetic very much. But most girls, as well as some men who pay special attention to maintenance, recommend using it every day.
Food: I have a big mouth, so when my mother asked me to bring pickled mustard tuber and pickles, my boss didn't want to. It turns out that this is very useful. I'm used to eating Egyptian food myself (related to my delicious habit). Bringing some snacks is mainly to solve the urgent need. For example, when we were on a cruise ship, dinner started at 8: 00, and we couldn't wait to open a pack or two to pad our stomachs first. It is also possible that these things really became our rations when the economy was tense in the early stage. Other uses, because there are bags everywhere in Egypt (one of their staple foods), you can also buy some bread or something. In case you can't get used to the local food, or you are shy, you can also cope with several meals.
Currency: Of course, Egypt uses the local currency L.E. My personal suggestion is to bring more euros and a proper amount of dollars. The options offered by travel agencies (we are local travel agencies in Egypt) are usually denominated in euros. Many commercial places in Egypt, such as hotels and shopping spots, are denominated in Egyptian pounds, but at the same time, for the convenience of tourists, they can also be settled in dollars, pounds and euros, and some can be settled directly in foreign currencies. My experience is that it is often more cost-effective to settle accounts in euros than in dollars (if converted into RMB). Moreover, the extra euro has not been used up, and it will not depreciate when brought back. I brought 400 euros, 125 dollars. At the same time, the credit card also swiped several transactions.
Tipping: Egypt is a tipping country. Life in Egypt faces this thorny problem every day. If you ask the director of the travel agency, they will say whatever you want. Our general standard for tipping is
Guide: Theoretically, it is $2 per person per day, which means 10 Egyptian pound per day. The six of us usually pay the tour guide 50 pounds/day (the tour guide usually stays with us for about 6 hours). Under special circumstances, we once paid 3 yuan/day (accompanied by a tour guide 10 hour).
Travel agency driver: 5 pounds per person or 1 USD/day. We usually give 30/40 pounds for six people (depending on the length of time), but drivers in some places will give us a lift at night, and we will give 50 pounds. If the driver only gives us a lift, we usually give 10 at a time.
Later, we will tip drivers more, because we think drivers are actually harder than tour guides.
Luggage rack in the hotel: 5 pounds per room or 1 USD (luggage for two people), and room cleaner: 5 pounds per room or 1 USD (1 day).
Go to the toilet: 1 kg once.
Especially about cooling oil. I once doubted the usefulness of cool oil. Think about it. Will this thing still work in two or three years? As it turns out, although cool oil is not everything, I still brought some. We usually tip others after we finish, which means it is generally unrealistic to tip with cool oil. After all, holding money is more affordable. But some people will ask you directly for cool oil (standard pronunciation), which is the best.
We once asked a French tourist about tipping, and he thought we paid too much. But we can't rule out a possibility, because they are a group of more than a dozen people and we are a group of six people, so the amount of tipping is still a mystery. It is suggested that if you meet foreign tourists, you can inquire about it and understand the market.
In fact, even now, we still don't quite understand tipping. Because according to our idea, all services, such as cleaning the room and eating, should be included in the price, and there should be no extra charge. After all, it is a different culture. I found that these service providers generally have low incomes, so they need tips to make a living. In any case, compared with the big head of Egypt's tourism consumption, the tip paid is only a few hundred yuan at most. Don't be too stingy and don't care too much.
Taxi: Drivers generally charge high fees, especially in Cairo. I may tell you 30 or 40 Jin, don't pay attention to him. Five pounds is really enough for tourists. If you really can't reduce the price, 10 is actually ok, after all, it is still very cost-effective compared with domestic ones. We also took taxis in Alexandria and Luxor. The drivers were all good, but the asking price was not high, so we reduced the price by 5 pounds.
