Fast reaction is my "shortcoming"

When I was in elementary school, my reaction was very fast. My answer would often be shouted out as soon as the math teacher finished asking the question, so The class teacher’s comments for several years have written about my only shortcoming: “I sometimes pick up on the teacher’s words in class.” Despite this, my studies have been good. In 1958, when the Great Leap Forward began, my mother organized some women to set up a machine embroidery club. They were too busy to cook. I've been learning to cook since I was 10 years old. After I entered junior high school, I would make noodles after school in the afternoon, serve them to my younger siblings, and then rush to school for evening self-study. Sometimes the noodles on my hands were not washed, and the girls at the same table often laughed at me. At that time, my family lived on Heping Road in Xi'an, close to No. 26 Middle School, where I went to junior high school. In high school, I was admitted to Xi'an No. 20 Middle School, which was the only high school in Shaanxi that admitted students from all over the province at that time, and is today's Xi'an Senior High School.

I went to school all through my own efforts. When I was in middle school, I read a lot of novels and literary and historical materials. I read many books on the way to and from school. It was about ten minutes from Heping Road through East 11th Alley to No. 26 Middle School on Jianguo Road. Once I was walking and noticed someone blocking the way in front of me. When I saw it, it was my mother. I called out "Mom!" and my mother scolded: "Watch the road!" On the way, I also memorized Russian words, mathematical formulas, etc., or copied wonderful fragments and wise sayings from novels and essays.

Studying for coaxing children to sleep was my college entrance examination

When I was in high school in 1964, my goal was very clear, that is, to go to college. But in June 1966, the college entrance examination was suspended for 11 and a half years. In 1968, I went to work in Huangniupu Commune, Feng County, Baoji, deep in the Qinling Mountains. In 1971, I worked as a worker in the Shaanxi Machinery Construction Company, and two years later I became a teacher. In fact, some colleges and universities resumed enrollment during the "Cultural Revolution", but the way to go to college was through recommendation without examination. I don't have such an opportunity, and I always feel unwilling.

In late October 1977, when the news of the resumption of the college entrance examination came, I served as a Chinese teacher and class teacher in the No. 2 Middle School of the Shaanxi Provincial Construction Engineering Bureau. According to national regulations, I can still go to school with a salary. However, there were various restrictions on registration for the college entrance examination at that time. My work relationship had just been transferred to the Provincial No. 2 Middle School, so I was unable to apply. I think that since the country has resumed the college entrance examination, there may be opportunities in the future.

In May 1978, I got the opportunity to apply for the exam for the first time and became a veteran past student. It was less than two months before the college entrance examination, and I stepped up to resume classes. Work during the day, study at night, and make use of some time at noon. I made a schedule, reviewing math for one month, reviewing politics, geography, and history for one week each, and Chinese? Forget it, I won’t arrange time. At that time, not long after the Cultural Revolution, there was a severe shortage of books. Although I taught in a middle school, I couldn't even find textbooks. My wife worked at a substation at the time, often working the night shift. At night, I put my two-year-old son to sleep, hurriedly lit a lamp and read until midnight.

It is my regret that I was not admitted to Peking University

The 1978 College Entrance Examination was the first national unified examination after the resumption of the College Entrance Examination. My admission ticket number is 102237. I took the exam at No. 12 Middle School in Beilin District, Xi'an from July 20 to 22. Politics and history were tested on the first day, mathematics and geography were tested on the second day, and Chinese was tested on the third day. Each subject is worth 100 points, and the five subjects are worth 500 points. In Shaanxi Province, from 1966 to 1978, about 300,000 middle school students applied for the exam, and only about 10,000 people were admitted to liberal arts and science colleges, which is quite difficult. Fortunately, I had a good foundation in the past and took the time to review it roughly. I passed the exam with ease and felt that I answered well.

At that time, each person was given a test question, and the test paper was a large piece of white paper. In the mathematics test, some candidates did not know how to do it and handed in the test paper early. I waited until the exam bell rang to hand in my papers. The invigilator looked at my paper when he was collecting it, asked me which school I was from, and said that I answered well. After the test, I estimated my score like kids do today. I estimated my score at 425, which was only 1.1 points more than the actual test score of 423.9.

No one explained how to fill in the application form at that time. The admissions brochure of that year stipulated: "Teachers are generally limited to applying to normal colleges." I was a teacher at the time, and when I filled out the application form, I thought: "General restrictions" are not absolute restrictions, and I am just a "work-for-work" teacher, and my estimated score is relatively high, so I think I can get into Beijing. of university. My first choice among key universities was Peking University, majoring in archeology and Chinese. I also applied to several universities in Beijing, Shanghai and other places. My second choice was to Shaanxi Normal University and other schools.

In August 1978, the score line was announced. The score line for the first class of Shaanxi Liberal Arts was 310 points, and the score line for the second class of Shaanxi Liberal Arts was 280 points. Later, I learned from the provincial and district admission offices that I was the only person in Beilin District with a liberal arts score of 380 or above, and only 8 people in the province had a liberal arts score of 400 or above. Not only was I ranked first in the province in mathematics, , the total score is also the first in Shaanxi liberal arts. At that time, there was no publicity about "the top scorer in the college entrance examination". Shaanxi Provincial Jian No. 2 Middle School posted a red message at the school gate with my name and score. As soon as the results were announced, many people said that Wei Chengshu would definitely go to Peking University this time.

Unexpectedly, when I was admitted, I waited for a week without any news, so I went to the admissions office at Chang'an Hotel in Chang'an County to ask if I had missed anything. The staff asked me for my test number and score and said, this is the highest score you have and you will never miss it. As a result, I was admitted to Shaanxi Normal University. The staff said that because you are a teacher, you can only go to a normal college. This made me a little dumbfounded.

Love and dedication are my life principles

A few days later, I received the admission notice from Shaanxi Normal University. I hesitated for nearly a month, and finally, with my father’s encouragement, I reported to the History Department of Shaanxi Normal University. When my colleagues from the Provincial No. 2 Middle School saw me off, they said: China will have one less archaeological expert and one more outstanding history teacher. I have been studying history, teaching history, and researching history for a long time. My basic literacy in historical science and long-term study and research habits have enabled me to constantly explore the true meaning of society. I take Sima Qian's "Study the relationship between heaven and man, understand the changes of ancient and modern times, and become a family" as my motto. In the past few decades, despite the ups and downs of life and misfortune, I have always worked seriously, lived a clean life, and maintained the virtues that an intellectual should have - conscience, love, enthusiasm and perseverance. For more than ten years, I have cooperated with many teachers and achieved good results in the college entrance examination in liberal arts classes.

Among the students we teach are Ni Ting, who won the first place in literature and history in the Shaanxi Provincial College Entrance Examination in 1993, Xu Xiaoyin, who won the first place in foreign languages ??in the Shaanxi Provincial College Entrance Examination in 2003, Xu Yuan, who won the top place in art, and the first place in history in the province. Gao Jinsong ranked first, Du Yiqun ranked first in liberal arts, and so on. Speaking of this, the faces of many students came to my mind one by one. The happiest thing about me is the recognition and respect I have received from students and parents over the years.
