Looking for answers in English translation

I had an interesting experience last year. After leaving a village in the south of France, I went on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me if I needed a ride. He got on the bus, I said hello to him in French, and he answered me in French. I don't know French at all except a few words. We talked on the trip. When he was about to reach the town, the young man suddenly spoke and said slowly, "I soon learned that he is an Englishman himself."
