Three reasons for the sudden outbreak of severe epidemic in Shanghai

1. The infectivity and concealment of Omicron variants are beyond our imagination.

According to experts, COVID-19, which is popular in China at present, is mainly an evolutionary branch of Omicron mutant BA.2, and its transmission ability is about 30% higher than that of Omicron. Most of the infections caused are mild or asymptomatic, which can escape the eyes of routine nucleic acid detection, so it is more subtle and brings difficulties to accurate prevention and control.

At the same time, it is worth noting that at present, scientists are studying three recombinant variants found in Britain-XF, XD and XE variants, among which XD and XF are the recombinants of Delta and Omicron's BA. 1 subtype, that is, the Delta Takron variant that was searched hot a while ago, and the XE recombinants that attracted attention this time are the recombinants of Omicron's BA. 1 and BA.2

2. The geographical position and orientation of Shanghai

First of all, Shanghai enjoys a superior geographical position and is the financial center of China. For example, on March 29th, the epidemic prevention personnel in Putian City, Fujian Province found that a man was positive for nucleic acid when conducting nucleic acid testing for returnees from other provinces. After investigation, the man had been in Shanghai before and developed symptoms such as cough on the 25th. On the 27th, a preliminary screening of nucleic acid was positive in a hospital in Shanghai, but refused to cooperate with the reexamination. Instead, I bought a train ticket and returned to Putian by train. This incident tells us that, first, under the severe epidemic situation in Shanghai, there are still a few black sheep who refuse to cooperate with prevention and control, which will increase the difficulty of prevention and control. Second, even under such strict prevention and control, the man can still return to Putian by train from Shanghai, which has to make us think deeply and fear.

In short, there is nothing wrong with the precise prevention and control strategy itself, but the times have changed, just because too many factors have led to the out-of-control epidemic in Shanghai.
