Many tourists know that there is a Chaoshan people group in Guangdong. These people are industrious and good at doing business, echoing from afar with Wenzhou people in Zhejiang and Minnan people in Fujian, but one problem is that they often make jokes.

What joke? It turns out that many foreign friends think that Chaoshan is a city, and Chaoshan people refer to people who live in or come out of Chaoshan city. In fact, Chaoshan is not a city, but a cultural area, just like Minnan Cultural Area in Fujian, Jiangnan Cultural Area in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, and Hakka Cultural Area represented by Meizhou City in Guangdong.

The narrow Chaoshan area includes Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang. In the era of Chaozhou Prefecture and Shantou District, this area was indeed one. Today, there are still many overseas Chaoshan Chinese who call themselves chaozhou people.

Chaoshan people have multiple identities. If I come from Shantou, I agree with both Shantou people and Chaoshan people. Foreign tourists don't live in Chaoshan and don't understand this tacit geographical identity. Jieyang is the oldest of the three Chaoshan cities, with Chaozhou as the economic and cultural center for the longest time and Shantou as the youngest.

Shantou is now more regional center than the other two cities.

Jieyang is the lowest key among the three Chaoshan cities, and many foreign tourists think it is only a county-level city.

Jinxianmen, Jieyang Building and Jieyang Gongxue in Jieyang City are all representative scenic spots. The earth building in Yuanlian Village, Baita Town, Jiedong County is a rare round enclosure in Chaoshan Cultural District. In the past, this kind of enclosed houses mostly appeared in hilly areas where Hakkas lived, and only Yuanlian Village was found in plain areas.

Yuanlian Round Building is ingenious in design and unique in shape. The wall is pulled together by the principle of mechanics, so that it still stands after hundreds of years, witnessing the changes of the times.
