The history of Mazda can be traced back to 1920. Its founder, Song Tian, started out as a bottle cork producer in Hiroshima. The company was originally named Toyo Cork Industrial Company, and 1927 was renamed Toyo Industrial Company. 1984 is named after the surname of its founder, Song Tian, and the transliteration of "Song Tian" is adopted in translation.

193 1 year, Mazda began to set foot in the automobile manufacturing industry and produced three-wheeled trucks. 1940 began to produce cars. 1967 signed an agreement with Wankel Company to obtain the production right of rotary engine, thus starting the rapid development period of Mazda Company. From 1967 to 1979, the company produced100000 Mazda cars. Starting from 1987, Mazda cars were produced in American factories with a production capacity of 240,000 vehicles. By 2002, Mazda had produced more than 35 million Mazda cars. This development speed is due to Mazda's R&D capability. After the rotor engine was imported from Wankel Company, Mazda Company made technical improvement and research, and successfully developed a 6-inlet electronically controlled rotor engine. This kind of engine adopts microcomputer to control the engine load state, and automatically adjusts the idle device and exhaust gas recirculation device to make the engine work smoothly, thus reducing fuel consumption and exhaust gas emission. Mazda's rotary engine cars rx5, rx7 and rx8 coupes currently put on the market are well received by users.

Due to Mazda Motor Company's long-term pursuit of output, product technology and market expansion, after sustained huge investment, it coincided with Japan's economic bubble in the early 1990s. 1995, Mazda motor company suffered huge operating losses for the first time, and was once listed as the second largest loss-making enterprise in Japan, with an annual loss as high as155.2 billion yen, which has lasted for six years.

At this time, Ford, a partner who owns 33.4% of Mazda, extended a helping hand. In June 2000, Mark Field, the foreign CEO of Mazda, led the formulation of Mazda's "New Century Plan", aiming at establishing an automobile company that can meet the needs of different markets and ensuring sustainable development in the future through a strong product lineup. The plan has four cores: marketing, products, finance and personnel training. After the implementation of the new scheme, the output decreased by 15%. Mazda achieved a net profit of $65 million in 2002, the most profitable year since 1982. At present, Mazda has 18500 employees in Japan, two manufacturing bases in Hiroshima and Fangfu, and a research and development center in Yokohama. Overseas, Mazda has established 19 factories in the United States, Thailand, South America and the Middle East, including a research and development center in the United States.

After 1998, Mazda tried to enter the China market, and FAW Hainan Mazda started production. Familia and Prima have been launched, and Mazda 3 is expected to be launched in 2005.
