Early life
Lenny Bruce was born in Mineola, New York, as Leonard Alfred Schneider, grew up in nearby Belmore and studied at C Meffin High School in Wellington. His parents divorced when he was young, and Lenny lived with many relatives in the next ten years. His English-born father, Miron (Mickey) Schneider, is a shoe store clerk and seldom sees him. Bruce's mother, Sally Marr (real name Sadie Schneider, born in Sadie Kitchen Berg), is a stage actress, which has a great influence on Bruce's career.
After working on the farm for some time, Bruce joined the US Navy at the age of 1942 and 16, and served on the North Africa in Palermo, Italy and the Brooklyn (CL-40) in Anzio in 1943 and 1944. 1945 In May, after performing a comedy for his comrades, his commanders became very depressed. He defiantly convinced the medical staff on board that he had homosexual impulses. This led to his dismissal from the army in July 1945. However, he did not admit or be convicted of violating naval regulations, and successfully applied for changing his discharge to "in decent conditions because he was not suitable for naval service". 1959, when filming the first episode of hugh hefner's Playboy's Attic, Bruce talked about his naval experience and showed the tattoo he got in Malta in 1942.
After living in California with his father for some time, Bruce settled in new york, hoping to become a comedian. However, he found it difficult to distinguish himself from thousands of other people who live in this city and are expected to become artists. One of the places where they gather is Hansen's restaurant. Bruce's first meeting with comedian Joe Ansis's restaurant had a profound influence on his comedy style. Many of Bruce's later daily lives reflected the careful education he received from Ansys. According to Bruce's biographer AlbertGoldman, Ansis's humor includes stories of stream of consciousness, sexual fantasies, jazz and Jewish family life.
One night, Lenny appeared in the Victory Club as "Lenny Massa" and acted as the emcee for one of his mother's programs. His improvisation won some laughter. Soon after, 1947, he changed his name to Bruce, earned 12 dollars in the first independent performance in Brooklyn, new york, and got a free spaghetti dinner. He later became a guest, and his mother introduced him on the Scout radio program in arthur godfrey. She calls herself "Sally Bruce" and imitates Sid Caesar's inspiration in Bavarian style, giving the impression of American movie stars (such as humphrey bogart, james cagney and Edward G Robinson).
Emotional marriage
Bruce met his future wife Harold, a stripper from Baltimore, Maryland, in 195 1. They got married in the same year and Bruce decided to end her striptease career.
1953, Bruce and Harlow finally left new york for the West Coast and acted as duo actors at the "Cup and Dish Party" in Los Angeles, California. Bruce then joined a strip club. Harold got a job at the Colonial Club, which was the best comedy and dance club in Los Angeles at that time.
At the end of 1954, Bruce left the strip club and found a job in various strip clubs in the San Fernando Valley. As a master of ceremonies, his job is to introduce strippers and perform their own evolving materials. Clubs in Silicon Valley provide a perfect environment for Bruce to create a new lifestyle. Albert Goldman, Bruce's main biographer, said that it was at "the moment when he sank to the bottom of the bucket and began to work at the bottom" that he suddenly broke away from "all the shackles, shackles and disabilities that made him mediocre before, and began to burst into a spontaneous spirit of freedom and resourcefulness, just like his new friends and admirers, which is the style and inspiration of modern jazz musicians."
Katie Bruce, daughter of Hani and Lenny, was born in 1955. In the late 1950s, he had an affair with jazz singer Annie Ross. From 65438 to 0959, Lenny and Hani's divorce case was finally concluded.
Bruce dated actress faye dunaway for a while in the 1960s.
Comedy career
Bruce's early works include writing a script for the ballroom racket in 1953, in which Bruce, his wife Harlow and his mother Mal played roles. Daydream (1954), low-priced farce; Children's movie Rocket Man from 65438 to 0954. He also released four albums of original materials about Berkeley fantasy records, including growling, comedy routines and satirical interviews, which made him famous: jazz, moral philosophy, politics, patriotism, religion, law, race, abortion, drugs, Klan and Judaism. These albums were later edited and republished as the original Lenny Bruce. Later, Bruce produced and sold two records, including a 10-inch album, about the performance of 196 1 in San Francisco, which triggered his legal dispute. Since the late 1950s, Allen Douglas, Frank Zappa, phil spector and Fantasy magazine have also published other unpublished Bruce works. Bruce developed the complexity and tone of his work in EnricoBanducci's North Beach nightclub "thehungryi Me", where MortSahl became famous earlier.
Dubbed as a "sick cartoon"-although he complained about the "sick" of modern society-Lenny was basically blacklisted on TV. When he appeared on TV, he really thanked compassionate fans like Steve Allen or hugh hefner, who made great concessions on broadcasting standards and practices. Some jokes that may offend, such as 1959, some teenagers smelling glue on the plane filmed live for Steve Allen show, must be printed in advance and approved by network officials.
He is becoming more and more famous. He appeared on a live Steve Allen program on national television. He made his debut and made an impromptu comment on Elizabeth Taylor's recent marriage with eddie fisher. He wants to know, "Will Elizabeth Taylor become a bat bar mitzvah?" On February 3rd, in a severe snowstorm, he gave a famous performance at Carnegie Hall in new york. It was recorded and later released on three records called Carnegie Hall Concert.
Fall into a legal dispute
The desire to end his wife's striptease career led Bruce to pursue a plan to make as much money as possible. Most notably, the fraud of Matthias Brothers Foundation led to Bruce's arrest in Miami, Florida later that year. He has been raising money for a leper colony in British Guiana (now Guiana), sponsored by his legally authorized Matthias Brothers Foundation. He invented the name himself, but it may refer to the Matthias brothers. He once made friends with Babe Ruth in Baltimore orphanage, where Ruth was imprisoned as a child. Bruce stole some pastor's shirts and a pastor's collar when he was dressed as a laundryman. Because of the legitimacy of the New York State Charter Foundation, the existence of leprosy settlement in Guyana, and the inability of local clergy to expose him as a liar, he was acquitted. Later, Bruce revealed in his semi-fictional autobiography "How to curse and influence others" that he earned about $8,000 in three weeks, sent $2,500 to the settlements of leprosy patients, and left the rest to them.
