3. Conversion of direct speech and indirect speech

1) Retell a declarative sentence or an exclamatory sentence without punctuation and quotation marks, and use say that with an object clause. After said, the person and tense in the clause should be changed accordingly.

She said, "I'm going to the market."

She said she was going to the market.

"What an interesting novel!" She said.

She said it was such an interesting novel.

2) Retell general or ambiguous questions without punctuation and quotation marks. Follow the object clause with if/where, and use the word order of the declarative sentence instead. The person and tense should be changed accordingly in the clause.

He asked, "You are a local, aren't you?"

He asked (me) if it/I was a local.

3) Retell multiple-choice questions, remove punctuation and quotation marks, and then follow the object clause guided by whether or not ... or, use the word order of declarative sentences and make corresponding changes in person and tense in the clause.

He said, "Is this car Mr Green's or Mr Brown's?"

He asked (me) whether the car belonged to Mr. Green or Mr. Brown.

4) Reporting special interrogative sentences, removing punctuation marks and quotation marks, using the original interrogative sentences to guide the object clauses, changing the word order of declarative sentences, and making corresponding personal and tense changes in the clauses.

She said, "Where are you going?"

She asked (me) where I was going.
