The shell of Trionyx sinensis is different from that of other turtles in that the bony shell has no peripheral bone plate, a high-texture surface layer, no angular external bone plate and a loosely connected abdomen (abdominal nail).

The trunk is slightly oval, the snout is long, the nostrils are open at the snout, and there is bony nail on the back. The limbs are short and slightly flat, and they are five-toed, with webbed membranes between the toes.
