Wukong, Wuneng and Wujing

The names "Wukong", "Wuneng" and "Wujing" are really familiar to us, because as a China person, most of us have seen or heard the work of The Journey to the West, and these three names correspond to the three characters of the Monkey King, Pig Bajie and Friar Sand. But what exactly do "Wukong", "Wuneng" and "Wujing" mean? Many of us may have only a little knowledge and can't speak clearly.

These three names are also mentioned in Under One Man. "Wukong" corresponds to a monkey jumping up and down, and the word "Heart Ape" comes from this. "Wuneng" corresponds to a pig full of worldly desires. To control these numerous desires, we must do the "eight precepts" and know what can and cannot be done, which is called "Wuneng".

Wu Jing, on the other hand, is a sand monk, who is mixed with hot monkeys and greedy pigs, and is responsible for rounding up the field. He is honest and quiet, making contributions in obscurity, and realizing the word "Jing".
