Is Disciple Rules still meaningful to modern times?
During my stay in Beijing, a lovely first-grade primary school girl treated me as her mother. One day, my child told me that there was something in the summer homework that recited the Disciples Rules. In fact, this is not unexpected. It has been arranged once during the winter vacation. I followed her for a while. To tell the truth, it's really hard to recite, especially at our age, which is no longer suitable for rote learning. It's not good for children either, because they don't understand most of the meaning.
At that time, I thought about a question and chatted with others. Is this disciple rule suitable for modern children?
In this article, I will talk about my own views based on some experiences when I recite with my children.
First of all, learning Disciples Rules is conducive to being a man and cultivating oneself. Although it originated from feudal society, it does not necessarily mean that feudal ethics will harm modern society. Many of them should be human beings, or the basic qualities that a modern civilized person should possess.
Nowadays, children are usually self-centered, but many parents let them go, even thinking that they have personality or are cute. For example, "parents don't slow down", which many children can't do, they often ignore the love of adults. "Lu Yu grew up, but he grew up quickly." Can every child do it? A common situation is that parents often say "good aunt" or "good uncle". If the children don't say hello, the parents will say, "Didn't they ask you to say hello?" Awkward? My child once asked me, "Why did you cook for grandma first?" Or "why pour grandma wine first?" Is that weird? Actually, it's not hard to understand. Maybe since she was born, others have been serving her food and drinks first, and no one has taught her that "the old man comes first, the children come last". Does modern civilization advocate respect for children, so it should be changed to "young first and then old"? One of the advantages of this child is that he loves learning. He often asks, "Is it impolite to do so?" The child is a blank sheet of paper or a small sapling. What kind of painting or appearance you achieve depends on adults and society telling them a correct standard, right?
The first half of "sincerity" is the requirement of a healthy life, and it also conforms to the norms of modern healthy life. The latter part is some code of conduct, which is also instructive to us. For example, can you "slowly open the curtains and don't make any noise"? Think about it, at home or in the office or other occasions, are we often scared by the sound of "Mao" closing the door? Can you close the door gently? Do you know how to turn the handle without making a loud noise? If we were more careful, we wouldn't be treated differently by other so-called civilized countries, and we wouldn't have to endure humiliation like German hotels, would we? "Don't ask, don't steal" should be more than just taking other people's things. Does plagiarism in academic circles not indicate the source?
The beginning of "letter" is "No matter what you say, letter comes first". Isn't this what China people need most now? Isn't that what we're trying to call for? At least it is better to let children know honesty from an early age than to think that deception and fraud are normal all their lives.
Secondly, some formulations and requirements in Disciple Rules should keep pace with the times, be linked with the requirements of the present era and reality, and cannot be mechanically copied. For example, "the old man stands and the young man doesn't sit." When an old man sits, life is to sit. "In line with modern norms, everyone should sit down and talk on an equal footing, and when standing and talking to children, try to bend over or squat down and keep your eyes level. "For another example, the child once asked me what' three years of mourning' meant. I said that children should be filial for three years after their parents died. It is difficult for children to understand, of course, the main reason is that she has not defined the concept of death, let alone the meaning of filial piety.
In this regard, I think it is impossible to observe filial piety for three years in a rapidly changing modern society. Is Kim Jong Il's three-year filial piety just filial piety? Forgive me, but I think this is more of a political strategy. But if not, there is no need for filial piety? Not only is it needed, but it is far from enough. Not to mention the example of unfilial. Saying "don't visit and greet your parents often" will lead to legal responsibility. Is this enough to make many people laugh?
Modern filial piety should be reflected in giving more respect, attention and support to parents while they are alive, instead of being unfilial for three years.
"Don't mind your own business, don't mind your own business" should also have a deeper understanding, especially in modern society. Should we care about those old people who faint on the side of the road?
Third, how to learn? It is really necessary for scholars to explain this research. We can't explain the essence to children with a little knowledge. Of course, I also read a book explaining Disciples Rules and made a literal explanation. I also used ancient and modern examples to illustrate that the writing style is good, but personally feel that the content is not suitable for children to read. I hope more and more suitable works can be brought to children and adults.
Family opinions, welcome to discuss! For the healthy growth of children, for their own happy life!
