What does sleeping have to do with Duke Zhou?

Sleep, we are also called "Duke of Dreams". Why do you say that? The relationship between Duke Zhou and sleep comes from The Analects of Confucius, a pre-Qin work. Confucius said: "I am weak! For a long time, I stopped dreaming about Duke Zhou! " It means, "How old am I? I haven't dreamed of Duke Zhou for a long time! " Confucius said that the Duke of Zhou, surnamed Ji, was a famous Dan. He was a son, a mother and a brother, and was called Duke of Zhou because he had a fief in Zhou (now northeast of Baoji, Shaanxi). After Zhou Wuwang's death, King Ji Cheng succeeded to the throne. At that time, Wang Cheng was still very young and knew nothing about governing the country. It coincided with the early construction of the Zhou Dynasty.

Zhou Gongdan ascended the throne as king, handled state affairs, established his capital in Dongyi, and put down the three prisons and rebellion in Dongyi. The system of rites and music made outstanding contributions to the establishment and consolidation of the Zhou Dynasty. After political stability and the system of managing the country was basically complete, Duke Zhou regained power as king in the ten years of regency.

Duke Zhou became synonymous with "dream", and sleeping was called "seeing Duke Zhou". There is a story in The Collection of Old Jokes and Little Guang Lin in Qing Dynasty: Teachers sleep during the day, but students are not allowed to doze off. When the student scolded him, the teacher made a mistake: "I am Duke Zhou." Tomorrow, his disciples also worked, and the teacher woke up and warned, "How did you do this?" Disciple said, "I also went to see Zhou Gonger." The teacher said, "What did Duke Zhou say?" Answer: "Duke Zhou said he didn't see his master yesterday."

Teachers sleep during the day, but students are not allowed to doze off. The student asked the teacher, how can you? The teacher lied that he had gone to see Duke Zhou. The next day, the students followed suit. The teacher picked up a ruler to wake up the students and asked him, "How could you do this?" The student replied, "I also went to see Duke Zhou". The teacher then asked the students, "What did Duke Zhou say?" The student replied, "Duke Zhou said he didn't see your teacher yesterday."
