The film story is based on a story in China's classical novel The Journey to the West, which tells the story of Pig Bajie stealing watermelon on his way to the Western Heaven to learn from the Buddhist scriptures. The Journey to the West is a 25-episode costume drama jointly produced by China CCTV and China TV Drama Production Center.
