Why did Myanmar refuse Nehru's proposal and become a province of India?

If Myanmar becomes a province of India, it will be administratively subordinate, which is impossible for anyone to accept. Therefore, Myanmar would rather lag behind than be controlled by others. Moreover, Myanmar and India are also different in religious beliefs, so they are emotionally unwilling to merge into one country, which will eventually lead to the split between Myanmar and India.

After World War II, some British colonies became independent one after another, especially British India. 1947 India and Pakistan took the lead in independence, and Myanmar gained independence from Britain and India the following year. In the process of Myanmar's independence, Nehru, the first prime minister of India, proposed to Myanmar to make it a province of India and then give it some economic assistance, but the Myanmar authorities refused to continue to partner with India.

In order to achieve independence, Myanmar had to pay India a debt of $6,543.8 billion, which shows that the people of Myanmar have a strong desire for independence. Of course, from an emotional point of view, the people of Myanmar do not want to be a province of India.

Because Myanmar was once an independent country, it was different from India in nationality, language, culture and so on, and its religious beliefs were also very different. In the 1930s, there was a great riot against India in Myanmar, and extreme Buddhists in Myanmar even hated every Indian, so if Myanmar became a province of India, riots would be inevitable.

Besides, although India has promised to give Myanmar a lot of economic aid, becoming a province of others is of course subject to others everywhere, and the Burmese will never become the ruling party of India after the merger, so it is simply impossible for the two sides to walk together. It is only the Indians' own mutual affection to make Myanmar a province of India.
