China is a "responsible big country"

"China has made remarkable achievements" and "China is an example". During the Bonn Climate Conference, while criticizing a few countries for blocking the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, international public opinion and delegates expressed sincere admiration for China's achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In an interview with German newspaper Le Monde, German Environment Minister Trittin pointed out that it is groundless for the United States to refuse to implement the Kyoto Protocol on the grounds that developing countries such as China and India have not set emission reduction targets. He said that Europe and the United States are major emitters of greenhouse gases. The annual per capita carbon dioxide emission of the United States is 20 tons, that of Europe is 10 tons, that of China is only 2 tons, and that of India is 1 ton. He also pointed out that while China has maintained rapid economic growth in the past decade, its greenhouse gas emissions have been greatly reduced, and China is "a true model of sustainable development".

In an interview with China, Pearson, a spokesperson for Greenpeace International, also pointed out that China has made great achievements not only in economic development but also in environmental protection in the past decade, which has aroused widespread concern in the international community. "To a great extent, China has set an example for people." Sebastian, head of Malaysian "Natural Society" organization, believes that China's conscious action in reducing greenhouse gas emissions proves that China is a "responsible big country".

In the special issue of the German newspaper Sü ddeutsche Zeitung on the Bonn Climate Conference, there is an article entitled "China, a new model", which specifically introduces China's achievements in reducing greenhouse gases. The article points out that "Kyoto Protocol" has not set emission reduction targets for China, but China has greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the past decade, which has played an exemplary role.

According to a survey conducted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, since the mid-1990s, China's GDP has increased by 36%, while its carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 17%. A report in Reuters also pointed out that China is taking action to clean up air pollution without treaty binding. The report said that China is making efforts to reduce subsidies for fossil fuels, support environmental research and development, and provide tax incentives for environmental protection industries. Most importantly, China is actively transforming inefficient coal-fired power plants.
