You can't give in to your children's education.

The following is Professor Qian Wenzhong's speech at the Third New Oriental Family Education Summit Forum:

Dear principals and teachers, I am very happy to come to this forum. It turned out that the topic of my speech was stipulated by the headmaster. But after listening to the speeches of the principals of No.4 Middle School and Zhengzhou Foreign Language School, I want to make a temporary change. I intend to talk about my views on education as a student, a parent and a teacher.

Frankly speaking, I have only four words about China's current education-"don't believe". I don't believe in education in China today. Why? Because in my opinion, all our views on education in China today may have originated from a mistake. Today, we haven't seriously thought about what education is.

We are constantly making concessions, making excuses for ourselves and excusing our children. I want to say that education is not like this and should not be like this. Education in China has become a serious problem. I don't believe that all problems have solutions. Our nation now has a strange mentality, that is, it is not afraid of problems. As long as we try our best, problems can always be solved. I want to tell you that this is a lie, and some problems will never be solved. For example, if a person has cancer, if it is found early, it can still be treated, but if it is found, it will not be treated, or it will be treated in a worse way, or it will be tolerated until the terminal stage of cancer. Is it still useful? It's useless. I think education in China may be like this. Today, we have seen too many educational problems, and we have given many reasons, theories and efforts. But please ask yourself, do you believe that education in China can be saved? I'm afraid it's hard to say. I personally don't believe it. Why? We have too many specious ideas in our minds. China is facing many problems that have never been faced in human history.

For example, the only child, the only child, is a "subspecies" that has never appeared since there were human species on earth. Never before in human history have so many people systematically lost their brothers and sisters in such a short time. Please don't forget that all our educational ideas, methods and means are aimed at children with brothers and sisters. Today, our educators are desperately rethinking, but don't forget that education has never been the subject in human history. We can't help it. We don't know how to educate these children. Never think that they are like us, they are different from us, and may even be completely different.

Today, we are going to talk about happy education and our childhood is very happy. However, were we happy in childhood? At least I'm not happy at all Memories are generally illusory and happy, "scars forget to hurt." All of us here, as long as we have been to college, who hasn't worked hard for the exam all the way? When we were young, we also had a lot of homework. When we were young, we didn't have enough to eat, and sometimes we were scolded by our teachers.

Why is education happy? I can't figure out how education must be happy. I'm afraid I'm confused by foreign education! It goes without saying that education is bound to be painful. I don't understand why we should give in to our children who are destined to inherit us.

Now our education for children is mostly encouragement, and there is nothing wrong with it. So, what about punishment? Can education be without disciplinary measures? Education can be completed by encouragement alone? I don't believe it either. The headmaster of Zhengzhou Foreign Language School said that parents should not read their children's diaries under any circumstances. I'm afraid I don't agree with you. Why not show it? My parents read my diary since they were young, and they don't think I'm stupid!

I heard that some time ago, the Ministry of Education issued a document, the content of which was "giving teachers the right to criticize students". Should teachers be given the right to criticize students? But when was it deprived? No deprivation. Should we return it? Nowadays, children can't scold, say or criticize, and they can't accept a little setback! My teacher punished me when I was a child, but today we have a good relationship. I'm afraid it depends on what parents are like to praise children blindly now. What about punishment?

Have we talked about international integration? I think it's a ghost. I study in Europe, and we often talk about how good education in Europe is. Ok, let's see how strict the rules of good schools in Britain are. The British Parliament passed a law to the effect that "teachers are allowed to take necessary measures, including physical contact, to force unruly students if their suggestions fail." To put it bluntly, you can knock it properly. Everyone says that education in Singapore is good. Isn't there a ruler hanging on the back wall of classrooms in primary and secondary schools in Singapore? It is said that children behave badly and are required to slap three times, and only the palms are allowed, not the backs. Only when two teachers are present can he be executed.

However, if the education in the past was wrong, how was the president trained? How were Xu Xiaoping and Wang Qiang trained? Aren't we educated in the past? Do we spit everywhere, or are we hooligans? We didn't do anything. It's good. I think education can no longer give in blindly, but should be truly responsible for children. Don't cater to some specious statements in society, such as quality education, happiness education and exam-oriented education. Examination is the most basic quality.

There is no absolute fairness in human society! China is unfair, and so is the United States! Now it can be said that the only relatively fair line is the college entrance examination. If we recruit students according to the so-called quality, how many children of civilians in China can enter Peking University and Tsinghua? A child can't even compete with others in fair competition, and he also says that he is of high quality. Who would believe it? Therefore, don't cater to the words of some so-called experts in society.

I now advocate the resumption of the national unified college entrance examination, and it is naked, so don't add points. Wang Qiang was the second in the college entrance examination in Inner Mongolia, and I was the second in Shanghai. We were all admitted to Peking University in this way. If the college entrance examination system cannot be changed, neither can our education. The college entrance examination is a baton! The reason why the college entrance examination system cannot be changed is because we can't find a system that is no worse than the college entrance examination system. The college entrance examination system is not the best system, but it is the least bad system.

I teach in the front line myself and have contact with students. I want to tell you that we should have an extreme sense of anxiety about China's education, and consider it on the basis of approaching despair, which may be hopeless. Many people ask me, "Mr. Qian, where are your children?" My answer is, "Truth or falsehood? If it is true, I will send him out, there is no way, no choice. " My son is in the middle school affiliated to East China Normal University, which is my alma mater and a famous school in Shanghai. Of course it's good. But the social environment is different from our time. So I think, I am in favor of being really strict with children. After all, children are not adults and must be disciplined and punished. They must know that education is not just happiness, and learning is not just happiness! When you realize that learning is fun, this student is likely to become President Yu in the future! If a person can feel happy in his study, he is likely to become a master! Most people don't. The vast majority of children have to study for a certain purpose, or to know the importance of learning to their lives!

We should tell our children that there is a price to pay for mistakes.

My father has a good education, but he can't stand his son educating his grandson. Once, when I was teaching a child, my father was a little unhappy. The son said, "Dad, why are you talking to me in this tone?" I said, "Because you are wrong." He said, "If you are wrong, you can't talk to me in this tone." I said, "Haven't you read Saint Amethyst?" He said, "Don't you just want to say,' It's my father's fault not to teach'?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Didn't you talk about the rules of the apprentice two days ago? Disciples' Rules says' Be filial and believe every time'. You won't make your father happy. Why should I make my dad happy? " This incident shows that our traditional education has completely collapsed today and we are facing a fundamental conflict. As a parent, I hope that if my son's teacher sees that he is a loser, it is appropriate to hit him twice and punish him for a while. The Ministry of Education should make such regulations to punish students.

We all say that it is right to encourage children to be confident, praise him and encourage him to be confident, but we can't go too far. This kind of education for children, in the society, the contrast he faces is enough to destroy him. We should tell our children that this society is cruel and unfair, and we should be prepared to suffer many grievances, be wronged early and exercise early.

If the principal and teacher punish my child who really made a mistake, and even hit him a few times, I will thank the teacher. I believe that most teachers have great love. I hope the teacher has a carrot in one hand and a stick in the other. New Oriental has created a great miracle of education. I think this forum should make a real voice and tell this society that education is not like this. Don't simply say it again. Happy education, quality education, happy learning and successful education are all successful. I think it's good to educate children to be happy ordinary people!

I think education is the most real thing. Teachers should not try to figure out what parents and children think, but keep making concessions to children and parents. So, to this day, my education in China is still four words-"I don't believe it".

I don't care if my children are admitted to famous universities in China. I just hope that he is healthy physically and mentally and has a good life. What's more, no one knows how many years human beings will have. Hawking said that there are still 200 years. If so, I will tell my grandson not to have children. Is this a joke?

Now, we should make our children as healthy as possible. We should give him the right to choose in the future, because we can't be responsible for our children. Unlike when we were young, life was difficult, society was underdeveloped and economy was underdeveloped, but our parents were still responsible for us. I think I envy my parents now. They dare to scold and hit the children, but we still love them. Today's children can't beat or scold, even if it's a look, maybe they can kill their elders tomorrow. Teachers dare not criticize students, and students can't be hurt at school. The teacher is afraid that parents will come to you endlessly to pester you.

When I talked about "filial piety" in Disciples Rules, I asked my assistant to search the negative examples of "unfilial killing my father" within one year, and then printed them out for me to choose as the negative examples. After a while, the assistant told me, "There is no printing paper!" " We don't have any control, restraint or bondage to our children, but we just give in to them in the name of love. This kind of education is wrong.

Perhaps this idea is abrupt, and we should try to make children learn more successfully, but I don't believe it in my heart, so I choose to report my true thoughts to the principal and the teacher. If we don't figure out something illusory, we are all finished!

Education, especially basic education, may not necessarily develop simply with the development of society. This is a big problem. We simply believe that education should develop with the development of society. To some extent, education should be "against the society". Is society educating, or is education educating society? I think it should be education in an educational society. Now the society is educating, so the ontology of education does not exist, and the most basic value concept of education does not exist. Our nation once endowed education with such high status and value, but today it has been completely disrupted.

The last line of defense of our society is education. We should not easily yield to society, nor to children, nor to parents. Our society should give principals and teachers greater rights, higher honors and better treatment, but it should also give them greater responsibilities.

Only in this way, after decades of hard work, I can probably consider letting my grandson stay in China to receive the education at that time. This is my truth. If there is anything wrong, please treat me as a student first, then as a parent, and finally as a junior teacher to criticize education. There is not a lie in what I just said, it's all true. Of course, Mr. Ji Xianlin taught me "Don't tell all lies, don't tell all the truth."
