Review of "Joker" (2019)

"Joker" is not a comfortable movie to watch. The clown is skinny, his body is vulgar, and his words and deeds are embarrassing in every way. If I met such a person in real life, I can't guarantee that my attitude towards him would be any better than that of the mother on the bus.

But from the first perspective, the clown is a monster created by that society.

First of all, as a single, low-income, mentally ill person, it is simply a miracle that the clown's mother can adopt a child. Everything has been wrong since the previous generation. The mother seems kind, but her abuse of the clown as a child left the clown with a lifelong disability of involuntary laughter. Although the behavior of mentally ill patients is not very controlled by their own will, the harm caused is indeed real.

In such a cold and ruthless society, a series of problems such as bullying, disparity between rich and poor, and cuts to social medical budgets push the clown to the edge.

One reason why clowns are so uncomfortable to watch may be that they are too real. I think it's a smart move in the movie not to depict the Joker as a mastermind who suddenly awakens and therefore has superior intelligence and controls the overall situation. The clown has no emotional ability. He cannot understand why the joke is funny. He can only mechanically record and imitate the behavior of the Standup Comedian master. He has no sense of existence and has received no response for a long time, so he cannot be expected to understand the pain of others, because his own pain has already taken up a lot of energy.

No more to say. This movie still has a strong sense of class struggle.
