Who is the Badashan people?

Badashanren refers to Zhu Da.

Zhu Da's nickname is Badashanren. Zhu Da is a descendant of the imperial clan of the Ming Dynasty and the ninth grandson of Zhu Quan, the seventeenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. His identity is not simple. He is a descendant of the royal family of the Ming Dynasty, and comes from a noble family. Unfortunately, he was unlucky. He 19 died just as an adult. Many descendants of the royal family worried that the Qing Dynasty would uproot the Zhu family and remain anonymous. Zhu Da was also afraid. He used the name "Badashanren" in his paintings and calligraphy.

Of course, this name also has its meaning. The name Zhu Da can be divided into four words, namely "Niu, Ba, Da and Er". In ancient times, it was used to describe "being in power", but the Ming Dynasty perished, so the word "Niu Er" was dropped from his name, and the remaining two words were "Ba Da". Zhu Da's surname was unknown. Therefore, it is called "Badashanren".

Zhu Da's experience

In the seventeenth year of Chongzhen, the Ming Dynasty perished. Zhu Da is nineteen years old. Shortly after his father died, he was extremely depressed and indignant. He pretended to be deaf and dumb and lived in seclusion in Shan Ye to save himself.

In the fifth year of Shunzhi (1648), his wife died, and Zhu Da became a monk with his mother and brother, and went to Gengxiang Temple in Fengxin County to get a haircut. Since then, he changed his name to Brother Xue. At the age of 60, Zhu Da began to paint with poems signed "Badashanren". When he pays for paintings, he often associates the words "Badashanren" as if they were words like "crying" and "laughing" to express his distress.
