"Farewell" was originally an episode of the 1983 movie "Old Things in the South of the City".

"Old Stories in the South of the City" tells the story of a six-year-old girl named Lin Yingzi who lived in a small alley in the south of Beijing in the late 1920s. Yingzi becomes friends with the "crazy" woman Xiuzhen.

Xiuzhen is the first friend Yingzi makes. Xiuzhen once secretly fell in love with a college student. Later, the college student was arrested by the police. The daughter Xiuzhen gave birth to, Xiaoguizi, was thrown into the city by her family. Her life and death are unknown, and her whereabouts are unknown.

"Old Things in the South of the City" is adapted from the novella of the same name published by Lin Haiyin in 1960. It is directed by Wu Yigong and stars Shen Jie, Zheng Zhenyao, Zhang Min, Zhang Fengyi and others. Released in mainland China in 1983.

The film won the Golden Eagle Award for Best Feature Film at the 2nd Manila International Film Festival, and won many awards including Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Music at the 3rd China Film Golden Rooster Awards.
