Is the Leica S2 better than the Nikon D3X or Canon 1Ds III?

What are the people upstairs talking about? It’s really ridiculous. Not to mention, some of them are wrong. It’s a joke to say that “full frame is a type of small format”!

First of all, the commonly used cameras nowadays are divided into two series: 135 and 120. The sensor size of the 135 full-frame camera is 36mm×24mm, while the sensor size of the 120 full-frame camera should be 60mm×60mm. However, due to technical reasons, current technology cannot produce such a large photoreceptor, so 120 full-frame cameras only have film ones, not digital ones.

After talking about the full format of 135 and 120, let’s talk about the medium format.

The sensor size of the 120 medium format camera is 48mm×36mm, which is exactly twice the size of the 135 full-frame camera.

So even a medium format 120 camera has a larger sensor than a full frame 135 camera.

The Hasselblad H series cameras are 120 medium format digital SLRs. The size of the photoreceptor is 48mm×36mm. The photoreceptor resolution of the latest Hasselblad H4D-60 SLR camera is 60 million pixels, and each photo is more than 100 MB. The price of one unit in China is 360,000 yuan.

As can be seen from the above, the 120 series cameras are essentially one level higher than the 135 cameras.

The Leica S2 is a 120mm small-format camera. The photoreceptor size is 45mm×30mm, which is still larger than the 135mm full-frame camera. The larger the photoreceptor, the higher the price. And it is not directly proportional, because if the size of the photoreceptor is larger, the difficulty and process will double. Therefore, if the photoreceptor is doubled, the price may be 10 times.

The above is one reason, and the other is that all Leica photoreceptors are CCD photoreceptors. Its imaging effect is better than the CMOS used by Nikon D3x. Its production process is complex and the materials used are expensive and rare. So the price is self-evident.

The third reason is best understood. Leica has been making cameras for a hundred years, and if the brand is strong enough, the price will naturally be high.

I think the above points are convincing enough.
