This is indeed common sense today, but it was not then. According to the understanding at that time, the orbit set by astronomers for celestial bodies is actually a literal orbit-celestial bodies are moving along some invisible "orbits", which are actually a law, rule or dogma, and there is no internal connection between celestial bodies.
In other words, the highlight of Newton's thought is to unify the familiar gravity with the operation law of "high-cold" celestial bodies and drag the "creature" off the earth.

2. Is it possible for this theory to be captured by a farmer?
Answer the first question first: of course ... no! At that time, there was another person who was also studying the operation law of celestial bodies. He is the second president of the Royal Academy of Sciences-Hook.
As early as 1662, he discussed with Ryan, one of the founders of the Royal Society, how planets move in orbit. He guessed that there is an attraction between the sun and the planet, which may decrease with the increase of distance. He also designed a simple experiment to test whether gravity changes with height, but due to the precision limitation of the instrument at that time, no result was obtained.
1674, Hook published the book "An Attempt to Prove the Movement of the Earth from Observation". In his book, he clearly pointed out that all celestial bodies have a gravitational force pointing to their center, which will not only attract their own parts to make them unable to fly, but also attract other celestial bodies located in their area of action. 1686, Newton published Philosophy of Nature.
In other words, Hooke put forward the concept of gravity earlier than Newton.

Then why did this honor finally go to Newton? Because Hooke didn't give the formula of celestial gravity, the orbit of celestial bodies can't be restored by calculation.
As mentioned earlier, due to the accuracy of the instrument, it was impossible to measure gravity difference at different heights on the earth at that time. So Hooke doesn't know exactly how gravity is reduced.
What Newton did first was to realize that "the magnitude of gravity is inversely proportional to the square of distance". And the calculation formula is given. With this formula, the orbit of a celestial body can be accurately calculated, which is an ellipse! Consistent with the observed height.
Of course, the first thing that fits the calculation results is the orbit of the moon. What data is needed to calculate the lunar orbit? You need to know the distance from the moon to the center of the earth, and you need to know the acceleration of gravity of the earth.
Where did these data come from? The distance between the Earth and the Moon was measured by Hippocrates, an ancient Greek astronomer born in 190 BC, which is 60.5 times that of radius of the earth, while radius of the earth was measured by Eratosthenes, an ancient Greek astronomer born in 275 BC. Galileo measured the acceleration of the earth's gravity with a simple pendulum.
