Stanley kubrick's Eye-opener is like an erotic daydream about missing opportunities and avoiding them. For the protagonist who spent two nights wandering in the black society, it was all foreplay. He never really xing, but he jumped very close and held his hand in the flame. Why would he do that? The short answer is that his wife makes him jealous. Another possibility is that the story she told inspired his rather dull imagination.
The film has a thriller structure, and conspiracy and murder may occur. This is also like a nightmare; A series of strange characters wander in the focus, confusing the protagonist with unexplained life details. The reconciliation at the end of the film is not feasible; A film that interests us because of its loose ending should not be tried to organize.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman play Dr. Bill and Alice Harford, and the couple move to a wealthy Manhattan society. In a long and boring opening sequence, they participated in a ballroom dance, and a tall Hungarian imitated a gentle seducer and tried to sweet talk with Alice ("Have you read the Art of Love by the Latin poet Ovid?" At the same time, Bill is accosted by two aggressive women, and then he is called to the upstairs bathroom, where the millionaire Victor (sydney pollack) who holds a party has a prostitute. She smokes too much cocaine and needs the help of a doctor.
At the party, Bill met an old friend of medical school, who is now a pianist. The next night, at home, Alice and Bill were hit by stones on the pot (obviously a very good pot, considering how stiff they looked). She described the fantasy of a young naval officer she met on vacation with Bill at Cape Cod last summer: "He never left my mind. I think if he wants me, just one night, I'm ready to give up everything ... "Had a fight. Bill left the house and wandered in the street. The picture of Alice having sex with an officer angered him. Now he has started his long adventure, similar to Joyce's Ulysses in the city that never sleeps and Scorsese's After Work, because Xing's scenes come into view. There are two jokes in this movie, both of which are very quiet: almost everyone who sees Bill, whether male or female, will have a sexual reaction to him. He will always position himself as a doctor, as if to assure himself of his existence.
Kubrick's great achievement in this film lies in finding and maintaining a strange, disturbing and sometimes even bitter tone for the doctor's strange experience. Shooting with granular high contrast, plenty of backlight, fill light and strong primary colors, setting the movie at Christmas to take advantage of holiday lights, he made it a bit fancy, just like a city juggling. Dr. Bill is not the real protagonist, but the person who takes action. It is beyond his ability to turn from one situation to another.
Kubrick pays special attention to every single scene. I think he made a deliberate choice, not to combine them into a continuous story, but to make each one a destination-to make every encounter as intense as a dream. In this dream, this moment is very clear, but it is difficult to remember where we came from and guess what will happen next.
The film pays great attention to supporting roles, and even deceives the camera in order to make them emphasize the second shooting; In several scenes, Cruise looks like a straight man. Sydney pollack is a key supporting role. As a confident and insidious person, he lives in old-fashioned luxury, with a deep voice, rich experience and decadence. Todd Field plays social pianist Nick, who arranges a secret party for Bill. Vnessa Shaw also played a great role. She is a prostitute. She will hook up with Dr. Bill and share a wonderful and sweet time with him.
The most interesting scene in this movie took place in a hotel. Bill asked the receptionist a question. Alan cumming plays a happy queen, and he is obviously interested. Rade Sherbedgia, a hoarse, bearded parent who plays a clothing dealer, may also be retailing his little daughter's favor. Ksenya Goryachova Camilla Manan is a waitress. It seems that she learned her craft by watching sitcoms. Mary Richardson is the daughter of a dead man. She tried to seduce Dr. Bill before her father died.
All these scenes have their own emphasis and intensity. Each sequence has its own dramatic arc. They are all extracted from the extraordinary carnival sequence of a rural manor, where Dr. Bill crashed and wandered in the sexual ceremony of Sadian and the scene worthy of Bosch's reversal. The masked man who controls the whole process has an ominous existence, just like the masked woman who warned Dr. Bill that he was in danger. This sequence has hypnotic power.
Alas, the carnival went through a famous digital conversion to cover up some more energetic rudeness. Make a fool of yourself. The event in question is seen from a certain distance, and there is no visible genitalia, which is more atmospheric than the action, but in order to get the R grade, the studio has to use numbers generated by numbers (two naked women holding hands and some men wearing cloaks).
In the draft, this mask is reminiscent of austin powers's famous genital hide and seek. Now that I have seen the perfect version of this technology, I will say that it is well done, even if it should not be completed at all. The joke is that "Eye-opening" is a comprehensive adult movie. With or without these digital effects, it is not suitable for young audiences. It symbolizes the moral hypocrisy of the grading system, which will force the great director to compromise his vision and make his adult films more acceptable to young audiences through the same process.
Kubrick died in March. It's hard to believe that he would accept a digital scam. "Eye-opening" should have been released during his production, either "Unregraded" or NC- 17. For the adult audience, it creates a fascinating sexual fantasy daydream. The last scene, in the toy store, impressed me with the traditional moral preaching-the compulsory happy solution of all problems-but the deep mystery of the film still exists. First of all, can Dr. Bill believe Victor's description of what happened in the past few days? I could have enjoyed the last shot in the corridor of the hospital. When Dr. Bill pushed the pianist's body, he hit a double gun.
