Simply put, the diversion tunnel is a part of the diversion structure of the diversion hydropower station, which leads the upstream water flow of the river to the vicinity of the power plant, and then pumps the water into the hydro-generator set through the pressure pipeline to generate electricity. The tailrace channel introduces the produced water into the river.

Not all hydropower stations have diversion tunnels and tailrace tunnels, and most hydropower stations have no tailrace tunnels.
