Introduction

The story of MetallicA should start with their drummer Lars Ulrich Talk about it. This is not only because Lars is the founder and spokesperson of Metallica, but also because his path to rock music is somewhat legendary.

On November 26, 1963, Lars was born into a sports family in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father was the famous Danish tennis star Tobin Ulrich. Under the influence, he began to carry out professional tennis training. The young Lars was very successful in tennis and became the "rising star" of Danish tennis when he was a teenager. All this seems to indicate that Lars will inherit his father's legacy and move towards becoming a sports star. But in 1973, the famous heavy metal band Deep Purple toured Denmark. Lars fell in love with rock music after watching this concert with his grandfather. Lars started playing the drums two years later, when he was only 12 years old.

In 1980, Lars was sent to Los Angeles for tennis training, which became a turning point in his life.

Since he didn't have many friends in the United States, Lars practiced drums alone during his spare time. Gradually, music replaced the status of tennis, and Lars finally gave up tennis, left the road leading to Wimbledon, and embarked on the road of rock music that he loved. It is worth mentioning that Lars finally arrived at the Wimbledon stadium, but not for the famous Wimbledon Open, but for a Metallica concert.

At that time, the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" was emerging, and Lars was extremely fascinated by it. He placed an advertisement in Recyler magazine (a magazine that can publish free advertising, many rock bands use it to find the personnel they need, and the famous Hole band was later formed through this magazine), looking for like-minded artists. But got no response. Disappointed, Lars flew to London alone to pursue his musical dream.

In 1981, Lars returned to Los Angeles, where he met James Hetfield. James was a native of Los Angeles and was a worker in a printing factory. He was influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath since he was a child, and he began to learn to play guitar very early. In high school, James organized a rock band called Obsession. James found Lars' advertisement in an old magazine and found him. The two hit it off and immediately started organizing a band. They first found James' fellow bassist Ron McGoveny in the band Obsession. Since James wanted to be the guitarist, they had been looking for a vocalist, but there was no suitable candidate, so James also served as the lead singer. Soon James found it difficult to sing and play lead guitar at the same time, so they recruited Lloyd Grand as lead guitarist, and James switched to rhythm guitar. They named their band Metallica, and this was the original lineup of the band.

Metallica is considered the most popular and influential heavy metal band in the past two decades, with sales of millions of copies in the 1980s. The band's style became more sophisticated in the 1990s, gaining a wider audience through radio and MTV.

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles in 1981, including James Hetfield (lead vocals/melody guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass). The quartet recorded four songs for the 1982 album "Metal Massacre 1" and another four for "No Life 'Til Leather." and quickly gained a following. In 1983, the band moved to San Francisco and signed with Megaforce Records, with Cliff Burton replacing McGovney and former Exodus band member Kirk Hammet replacing Mustaine. In May, the new band released "Kill 'Em All", (original title "Metal Up Your Ass"). After a European tour with Venom, Metallica released Ride the Lightning in 1984, which became more complex and attracted more fans.

After signing with Elektra Records, Metallica released the album "Master of Puppets" in 1986. The European tour later that year brought tragedy to the band - on September 27, 1986, on the way to Stockholm, bassist Burton fell out of the car window and died on the spot.

After the band returned to the United States, they recruited Jason Newsted, the bassist of Flotsam and Jetsam, and recorded the album "Garage Days Re-Revisited".

Metallica's 1988 album "And Justice For All" was a success, reaching the top ten, despite only limited promotion. Later Metallica decided to adopt a mainstream style and released an album of the same name in 1991. The album topped the charts and sold seven million copies. Dubbed the "Black Album" for its all-black cover, it included the singles "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters." While the band was touring the world, Elektra released the compilation album Live Shit: Binge and Purge in 1993.

Metallica released "Load" in 1996 and "Reload" in 1997, both of which topped the charts. The latest album is the double CD "Garage Inc.", released in November 1998.
