World Environment Day refers to the year, month and day.
1On June 5th, 972, the United Nations held the first conference on the human environment in Stockholm, Sweden, and adopted the famous Declaration on the Human Environment and the Action Plan for Protecting the Global Environment. In June+10 of the same year, the 27th General Assembly decided to establish the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the recommendation of Stockholm Conference, and officially designated June 5th as "World Environment Day". Since 1974, the United Nations Environment Programme has set up a theme for World Environment Day every year and carried out related publicity activities to raise people's awareness of environmental protection and care for their homes.
Desertification refers to land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas caused by climate anomalies and human activities. Over the past half century, due to excessive reclamation, overgrazing and deforestation, the land has become barren, vegetation has been destroyed and soil erosion has been serious, which has aggravated the threat of desertification to human beings.
According to the data released by the United Nations, there are more than 1 10 countries threatened by desertification, with a population of over 10 billion, of which1350,000 people are at risk of displacement. United Nations research also shows that the land in arid areas, which accounts for 4 1% of the world, is deteriorating due to climate warming, and the global desert area is gradually expanding. At present, 10% to 20% of the land in arid areas supports 2 1 100 million people, and these lands have lost their economic value.
Africa is the region with the most serious desertification. According to statistics, about two-thirds of Africa's land is covered by desert and dry land, and half of the world's desertification land is in Africa. In the past 30 years, the forest area in Africa has been reduced by about 50%, more than 700 million hectares of grassland have been lost, and the per capita cultivated land has been reduced by more than half. This situation poses a serious threat to food security in Africa, resulting in more than 300 million people suffering from desertification. Land desertification in Asia is also very serious. More than half of the arid areas are affected by desertification, especially in Central Asia. Nearly a quarter of the land in Latin America and the Caribbean is desertification, and the production and life of 654.38+0.4 billion residents are threatened by desertification.
Because desertification has seriously threatened human survival, the United Nations Environment Programme took "Deserts and Desertification" as the theme of Environment Day in 2006, and put forward the slogan "Don't let dry land desertification", the significance of which is to warn people that the increasingly serious desertification in the world has become a major global environmental problem.
