Cocodara is a county-level city directly under the jurisdiction of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It and the Fourth Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps implement the management system of integration of division and city, which is managed by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Keke is Kazakh, which means "green", and Dala is Mongolian, which means "Yuan Ye". "Cocodara" is a place name produced by the combination of Kazakh and Mongolian, which means "Green Yuan Ye".

Cocodara is located at the westernmost border of China, about 25 kilometers away from Ili Prefecture and about 700 kilometers away from Urumqi, the capital of the autonomous region.
