It played an important role in all previous revolutionary wars and made great contributions to the people's liberation in China. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), the militia system became the national military system.

The Military Service Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) promulgated on May 3 1984 stipulates that the militia should be combined with the reserve. Militia is not only an integral part of the national armed forces, but also the basic organizational form of county-level reserve.
