The Qinling Mountains in the south of Tongguan County belong to the Archean Taihua Group, which is an east-west banded uplift formed after the Lvliang Movement. During the Himalayan movement, faults occurred along the southern margin, uplifted northward and sank southward, forming a horse-seeking graben. The Cenozoic was controlled by the Qinling banded tectonic system and the Qi, Lu and He tectonic systems, and the two tectonic movement systems were squeezed, stretched and fractured, forming the Wei Fen Graben.

In addition, a secondary piedmont fault depression (Huayin-Tongguan fault) was formed under the influence of one-way uplift. Due to the squeezing of two grabens, Tongguan Mountain was strongly broken and uplifted, and the Qinling Mountains appeared in China. Since Quaternary, the north of the piedmont fault has become the Loess Plateau due to the flood and sandstorm. Huang Wei Valley was formed after long-term flood erosion in northern Taiyuan.
